    Shimano Chronarch 50mg

Is this the reel that everyone raves about and that they have quit making?

    Re: Shimano Chronarch 50mg

I don't know if they have discontinued it or not. It is the lightest low profile baitcasting reel that Shimano makes (made). It weighs right at 5.9oz, and is great for making longer casts with lighter lures. I own two of them and wouldn't trade them for the world. I use them for lightly weighted plastics and jigs, and also use them for throwing weightless plastics as well.

I think the reel you may be speaking of is the older Curado, the CU-200BSF (Bantam Super Free). I used to own six of these reels, and just sold them this past year to get newer equipment. There wasn't a thing wrong with any of them. Make sure if you pursue this model, not to confuse it with the standard CU-200 Curado. The plain CU-200 is a dark green, while the CU-200BSF is a lighter green and has a designator label on the front of the reel that says Curado BSF. Also, the designator label beside the handle says CU-200BSF on it.

Many people own both models, but the BSF model is the better in my opinion. Shimano made the Super Free better in the BSF models so lures could be casted a mile. Both are great, durable, long-lasting reels and will hold up to any busy tournament schedule. Just ask anyone that owns some.

the 50 MG is discontinued now. SO they can come out with a new version and charge 100 more for it.... Core 50 MG. supposed to be as light as the steez. Guessing it will be introduced at I-Cast.

MG50 is gone. I bought 2 before they were gone from the stores.

Shimano has released a 5.5oz reel in Japan in a 7:1 ratio called the Aberdene or something like this. It is being nicknamed the BOB by many in the US. It looks like a 100 version of a Curado E7 from the pictures but very small to hold.

I hear speculation that a US version will be released at ICAST in July. Price probably will be $350 or so; just guessing.

Just my opinion, but Shimano is shooting there self in the foot. They keep cutting models and coming out with more expensive duplicates. I talked to a rep about my Mg spinning reel being junk and he said he was sorry. Good luck to them. They got enough of my money.

I think they got the Curado E7 right in price performance but I generally agree that they appear to be constanty moving the average price for there nicer reels up the price ladder.

My guess is that they had to eliminate the MG50 to create enough market room for a smaller slightly lighter version that would potentially cost more. Only time will tell the price point. Most guys are saying at $250 this new model would be a great value but most are betting it will be closer to $350.

I think they are also coming out with a better version of the MG spinning reel, if you look hard enough the stradic mgs are about 100 off right now, guessing there is a reason they are on sale.

just got one the other day i guess it is the standard cu-200e it was either that or the quantum energy went with the shimano. i will try it out mon-wed. on rough river. it seems to be a real smooth reel by just doing some short casts in the pool. i hope i will like it this is my first shimano reel.

    thanks

    Re: Shimano Chronarch 50mg

    Ranger,

Yes, Shimano has discontinued the Chronarch 50mg. They will be coming out with a totally new reel within the next 8 to 10 weeks. The only thing it has in common with the old Chronarch 50mg is the physical size.(it will even be slightly smaller)

This new reel will be part of the "Core" family and will be the smallest and lightest (5.5 oz) baitcaster that Shimano has ever built. It is designed for light fluorocarbon lines and light line finesse fishing. It will come in a high speed 7.0:1 gear ratio.

Price will probably be somewhere in the 360.00 to 375.00 range and when you consider the Diawa Steez sells for $500.00, the new Core 50mg is a steal!!

I can't wait to get my hands on one!!
