My nephew was just as bad; he was walking the landlines with my husband and me and carried a machete to cut through some bamboo briars deep in the woods. All of a sudden we heard an unmistakable buzzing sound, a rattlesnake. He looked down just in time to see it strike his leg just above the ankle and it's fang got hung in his pants. He swung the machete and cut the snake in two and then chopped its head off. I hate to think what would have happened if he hadn't been wearing boots that protected his leg.
Oh, and PETA should have warned that snake not to eat the half-grown rabbit that was in its belly.
