Different guides have different rules in their boats. You need to make sure when you book a trip that you and the guide are on the same sheet of music as to how long, how many, etc. I do know that most of the striper guides offer so many hours or until you get your limit..which ever comes first. This is because the stripers survival rate after release is very low in the warm water months. Nothing wrong with that as long as you and the guide understand the rules.

For instance: I am a catch and release, artificial lure only bass (LM/SM) guide. We don't keep the fish in my boat..they all go back in the water whether they weigh 1 pound or 10 pounds. I have had a lot of potential clients argue with me over this...they seem to think that if they pay me, I have to keep the fish if they want to keep the fish. Ain't gonna happen in my boat. I run my business the way I see fit and if they don't like it they can book another guide. But, I always talk to new clients about this before we go out if there is even possibly a chance for a misunderstanding of this rule. I always also talk to my clients to try to find out what they want to get out of the trip...a lot of fish or more teaching etc...everyone is different and I try to tailor my trips to the client as long as it does not break any safety rules or my catch and release policy. That is why I am the Captain and they are the client.

Not sure of the circumstances here so can't really say one way or the other who should have done what.
