About this time every year I plan a creek fishing trip. Three of us went yesterday to canoe and wade. We ended the long day with over 180 fish. What a great way to spend the day and stay cool.
Our biggest smallie was about 15". We had many over 12".

Sounds like a blast! Hoping to get to go July 6 or 7 with my buddy from East KY, join us if you want.
Going canoeing with teh kids this weekend at Blue River. Any suggestions on baits to use?
2" floating Rapala minnow baits worked real well for us in the AM. By late morning we were catching fish on tube jigs and beaver style baits in smaller sizes. Also, 2" & 3" pumpkinseed Berkley Power Grubs rigged on a 1/16 oz. jighead has always been a fish catcher!
i would love for one of you creek fishers to take me sometime. i have only done this once and it was on the new river. i had a blast. where in eastern kentucky can i do this?
Where is the best smallmouth creek nearest the Louisville / Bullitt Co. area?
Floyds Fork has some good smallies, and msgtMills on here can give you info about Beshears Creek. The best smallmouth fishing close to us that I have done was at Otter Creek, but it is now closed.
Floyds Fork is probably the best. But I say that based on access. Running the whole length of the county gives it a lot of access. Fish wise, it has its moments. The Salt River isn't bad either, but I've mostly fished above the lake. There's also the creek that runs past Knob Creek Gun Range that's ok.
I love creek fishing. Around here if you just put on a redworm and then a split shot about 14" up from it you never know what you'll catch.
Last weekend I caught a buffalo, shad, white bass, catfish, smallmouth, a really nice 14" crappie and tons of sunfish using this method.
Also if you cast along the banks and let it sink its game on with the warmouth.
Toughest part is finding a spot thats not private...
the new river is awesome, thats for sure! i just love the atmoshpere of the creeks! nothing like wading a while then floating a while. if i lived near a few good creeks, i probably would not own a bass boat honestly. thats how much i enjoyed doing this. heck, my favorite things to fish around where i live are creeks off the river! i guess im a creeker!
