Trout--What they taste like?

People say Striper tastes like Orange Roughy, and vice versa. I've never had trout. What does trout taste like? Some guy at Walmart told me it tastes like Catfish that was eating too much SauerKraut when it was caught. Is that true?

I love trout, and I'm wondering how that guy at Walmart prepared his, because that's nothing like what it tastes like. Trout are in the same family as salmon, and to me that's the closest comparison. Basically they taste like a milder-flavored salmon. When we catch the little "stockers" they put in the local ponds, I scale them, then the missus scores the sides with a knife, marinates them for just a short time (15-20 minutes is plenty), then bakes them, and they're really good, although as Art pointed out, they're kind of bony. Now, if the ones your cooking are big enough, then you can butterfly filet them, and stuff them with some bacon and green onions and whatever else you want. That's called Trout Hemingway, and that is some AWESOME eatin'!

So what kind of freshwater fish tastes like tuna fish, or what kind of freshwater fish can I "tune-up" to taste like "Tuna-Fish".

I have no clue on this.

Last question........do crayfish really taste like shrimp? Or do they just tell ya that to get you to buy them? Isn't a crayfish really just a freshwater baby lobster?

Eating crayfish is really two different eating experiences, one when you eat the tails, and one when you **** out the heads. The tails, to me, compare most closely to little bitty lobster tails, but they're not quite the same (remember, crayfish come from freshwater, lobsters from salt). The heads, if the 'dads were cooked right, taste like a kind of buttery, spicy, slurry. Otherwise, they taste like something you might have dipped out of Floyd's Fork where it runs past Miles Park.

Trout are the best tasting fish! that said, i have no idea how to describe it. Red Lobster has really good trout, although its better if you catch and cook it yourself. My wife is from the Republic of Georgia and they just fry trout whole which is a delicious way to eat them.

I'm not much for trout, but a friend of mine loves to wrap them in foil with butter and lemon, and grill them. As far as freshwater fish go, I think the crappie is king of the table.
Broiled crawfish are one of my favorite foods. If you want to try it, you can get a frozen 3lb bag of already cooked dads at miejer for about 10 bucks. Just throw them in boiling water for a few min and enjoy. I like dipping them on honey mustard. MMMMM.

I dont know any freshwater fish with the same taste of tuna. Pure speed and power, an absolute blast to catch.

Bob take a Cedar plank about 12 inches and thin about 3/8 inches thick. Place the trout on that plank and cook on low heat about 200 degrees for 30 minutes.

Take from oven and throw that trout in the garbage can and eat that Cedar plank cause it's gonna taste much better than that trout ever will!

Lol,i thought i was the only one who didnt think trout tasted fantastic.Its o.k but i was always told growing up that it was great.I always get a trout sandwich every year at the fair or boat show and everytime i wish i wouldnt have.Maybe ill learn next time.

I think its good to remind ourselves why it is we don't like something. So do keep getting the trout at the fair. That way if I decide to try one, I might get lucky and find they are sold out

I have always heard that when you fix trout, you want to leave the head on. Something about the trout not tasting like trout unless you do that. Unlike everything else that almost tastes like chicken, trout does not.

Some people like the taste of trout but most others hate it and only eat it because they already caught it, cleaned it and cooked it. Trust me its no better then the last time you ate it.
For those of you that don’t like the taste of trout but want to eat it, wrap it completely with pepper bacon and bake for 30 minutes. The bacon flavor will dilute the trout flavor and make it taste like fish again. Trout is actually pretty good this way but any other way it still tastes like trout.

Remember that trout are essentially a cold water fish, and are more oily than other fish. they are best prepared without a lot of oils, which is why they are popular out west grilled or cooked over an open fire....at their absolute best beside a rocky mountain stream, over an open fire, the smell of ponderosa pine, elk grazing across the meadow....why am I still at work????

I had no idea that many people didn't like eating trout. I think they taste like a mild tasting salmon. I've never actually tried to compare them to other fish though since I tend to cook them different (I like to gut and then grill trout, gut and fry just about everything else).

I thought the main reason trout were stocked in Ky was so they could be caught and eaten. Seeing how most won't survive through the summer in most streams here in Ky, what else would you do with them?

It depends on which fishery you're talking about. They stock them in ponds around Louisville and a couple other urban areas:

and those, of course, are strictly "put-take" stockings.

But there ARE quite a few natural trout streams in KY, and many of them are catch-and-release only for part of the year:

These are "put-grow-take" stockings. Trout can and do survive the summer quite nicely in these streams. And the Cumberland River tailwaters is as good a trout fishery as you'll find anywhere in the country.
