Engine Rpm

1992 70 hp Johnson. Shouldn't this engine turn 5500 rpm @ wide open throttle? Tach said 7000 . 1993 Sprint 255.

Don't know all that much about it, Les .... but, sounds like your tach is lying to you. I'd think that if you were actually turning 7000 rpm on a 70hp motor, that it'd blow. I had a 70 Yamaha that would turn 5700, trimmed out and not much load ... but that was the best it would do (unless I overtrimmed it ... LOL !! )
I'd have the tach tested, unless you could hear a BIG difference in the motor's sound when the tach said it was turning 7000rpm's. I'm pretty sure there'd have been a totally different sound coming from it.
