Just thought of a upside to my screwed up fishing season this year.
As I haven't caught crap this year, atleast I don't have to worry about anybody taking my spots.
Downside: Anybody who sees me fishing a spot all day, then takes the spot when I leave, is likely to be looking to kick my butt. I probably inadvertently caused them to waste a day of fishing.
DISCLAIMER: Until I start catching more fish (or atleast learn to lie better), take my advise this year "AT YOUR OWN RISK"![]()
Thats pretty good!Just thought of a upside to my screwed up fishing season this year.

I don't have anything against someone keeping a legal limit of fish. He's your buddy you didn't know he was a catch and keep fishermen? I've learned long ago do not give up prime spots the buddy that swore he would tell no one he will be setting in your spot with someone else when you get there. It happened to me. I was one mad man
I made a big mistake by telling a friend a few spots that I fish at T-ville awhile back. He informed me the other night they caught several keepers that "tasted good and he was glad I helped him". I bout blew my stack on the spot. I never dreamed he would keep bass to eat. He knows I'm strait C&R. I asked him why and he said " Don't worry, theres a ton of bass in there" which my reply was if that was true, why ask me for help finding them if it was so good? He couldn't figure out why I was upset. He is now wearing those spots out. Now I have to find a few more and thats not easy there. I had 6 or 8 now 2 less. I hate to not help buddies out but I believe there are only a few I can trust now. I'm disappointed in myself because it made me proud to have found some good spots there that produce regularly and I didn't keep my mouth shut. Guess I had it coming for being full of pride and boastful. On the bright side, I will find out how good I am there by finding a few new holes to hit , but he won't know
I have a different view on this, and I hope you don't get offended but I just have to say it:
First off, we need more people like you around that are willing to help a buddy out and give him a good spot to fish. People are way too stingy with their fishing spots. I mean come on, it is fishing, it is supposed to be fun. I give out spots all the time to people if they ask just because I like seeing people have a good time.
Secondly, keeping and eating a bass is not a sin nor is it breaking the law. I don't get you catch and release only guys. Do you think bass are an endangered species? Last time I checked there are plenty of fish in the lakes if even I can go out and catch a limit on a regular basis. That is why there are creel and size limits on bass so we can manage the resource. If there were no guys out there harvesting these fish, they would soon become overpopulated and you wouldn't find anymore big fish in the lakes. So us "catch and release into the grease" guys may actually be doing you a favor.
And lastly, your spots aren't "ruined" just because your buddy kept a few bass from those spots. Bass can and will travel miles in search of cover and food. If these spots are as good as you say they are, then I am sure there will be other bass in line to call that spot home.
So do all of us fishermen a favor and keep helping out your fellow fisherman in need, the lake is there for all of us to enjoy. Don't you feel good about helping a friend have a good day on the lake? I know I do when I give someone a good spot to fish.![]()
The answer is probably somewhere in between. Now, I don't mind if people keep a few bass but I can fully understand being upset if you do not and you help someone that does. I don't keep them and can't understand why anyone would.. But everyone has their own opinion and no one is right or wrong.
Having said that, we've had similar situations on this board with stripers. Several of us used to provide extremely detailed reports here. Then someone preceded to take some detailed information and did a bunch of catch and release in the summer, which is a big no no for me and anyone else that really cares about the species. So, no more detailed reports on this board from me or several others that I know of. BUT, we do provide enough details that if someone is really into it, they can use it.
So maybe the answer is to provide just enough where if someone is into it, they can use it..

One question:
I only fish for stripes below the dams, so I am clueless about fishing big lakes for them. Why is it a no-no to catch and release them in the summer?
Just thought of another:
Why would you not be able to figure out why people would want to keep bass?
A friend is worth more to me than any fish, tournament, or spot in the lake! Enough said!
Not trying to hijack the post. I understand being upset about the situation. It is hard to find spots that tend to hold fish consistently as largemouth are known for being territorial fish in most Ky impoundments.
To throw in another point of view about the comparison between C&R and keeping fish. Both are considered management practices to maintain a healthy population within a fishery. Think about it, if it wasn't for the C&R folks then the creel and size limits that we experience today would not exist. If everyone kept their limits everytime on the water, populations would soon crash which would result in lower creel limts, maybe none at all until populations rebounded.
On the flip side, if everyone practiced C&R only, then populations would increase to the point of overpopulation with all the negative effects associated until managers either had to increase creel limits, change size limits, or other options in order to try to balance the populations.
I'm not taking sides in this post. I do have "my beliefs" on the subject about both practices and their importance to fisheries management. In order to stay neutral, I will stop at this last statement. Both practices are applied and considered by fisheries managers for a reason. They are the most inexpensive way to manage fish populations.
In warm waters, stripers will build up lactic acid that shuts their muscles down and the water doesn't have enough disovled O2 for them to recover. The condition causes them to sink like a rock and they simply sink to the bottom and die.
I don't like the taste of bass..But on top of that, they are not a put and take fish like Bass. But I do like crappie and walleye so..
What are you supposed to do with stripers you catch in the summer months then?In warm waters, stripers will build up lactic acid that shuts their muscles down and the water doesn't have enough disovled O2 for them to recover. Keep them, clean them and eat them... And don't fish for them further when you have a limit. We've sort of high jacked this thread so it may be a good idea to start a new one if we wish to talk further on this..
