Well i had 5 bass this weekend and one of those got off right at the boat. 3 were caught on top water and 2 on a jig. Three of those were actual keepers, 15in or more. It was tough! Really Really slow!
We had very little luck Friday evening and Saturday morning going after bass. Caught about 4 just under 15 in. Using hard baits and pastic worms on the points and rock walls. So Saturday evening and Sunday morning we started fishing for Hybrids. Man those things are fun to catch.
It's been rough at Rough this year for Bass but you can always count on the Hybrids for some fun.
While fishing for Hybrids we also caught a 16" Crappie. That's the biggest I'd seen in a while.
How were you catching the hybrids? Topwater or Spoons? Were you just looking for the jumps? I don't fish for hybrids much but when the bass fishing is slow I wouldn't mind going for some hybrids. We had very little luck Friday evening and Saturday morning going after bass. Trolling 1-2 MPH using 1/2 oz. Horse head Jig with a 2" White grub. I typically us my flippin' rod or a heavy action worm rod. They are nice because you can use your bass gear to fish for them. once the thread fin shad get bigger I'll start cast netting them and using them instead of the grub.
Can you fish for hybrids at any time or is there a specific time of day that is best? Also are you just trolling out in the middle? What part of the lake? I don't know anything about hybrid fishing, I only bass fish.
You can fish for them any time I have had my best luck from between 6-9 PM. I'm down near Peter Cave most of time but have also fished Laurel Branch. I normally use my LCD to find the big schools of Thread Fin Shad and base my depth on them. Typically I'll start around 3 feet below where the thread fin are unless I see the Hybrids in the jumps.
Thanks for the info. I usually put in at the state dock and see a lot of people fishing by the dam often. I was there two weekends ago and saw them in the jumps big time, just didn't know what to use to try and get one on. So basically you have to find the baitfish and then go from there?
That is typically how I do it I can't speak for others. I'm sure there are people doing better than I at catching them that would have some useful advise.
I am going back to Rough this weekend fishing sun night through mon morning. I will post my results here on Monday. Any other suggestions for largemouth and hybrids on Rough anyone?
If you see some hybrids in the jumps throw a chrome zara puppy at them. I filled both my livewells at Nolin doing that. It was a blast. I just followed them around with the trolling motor, waiting for them to bust on the top of the water and I would immediately throw to where they just splashed.
