I'm not one to sound doom and gloom but I'm thinking we may see 11% and 12% before it's all over...and I also think we're going to struggle for a long period of time to keep unemployment under 10%...perhaps into the summer of 2010 (or longer). I'm in construction and friends let me tell you, it is very bleak at best.

    My .02 worth.

    P.S. (I hope I'm wrong!)

I don't like Obama one bit, but this isn't his fault.

The American economy and more specifically business and even more specifically workers have gotten disproportionately fat and lazy compared to much of the world and this is the adjustment to bring things back to balance.

Look around - with unions and even without unions it takes 4 and 5 people to do the job that one person could feasibly do. We're so terribly inefficient in all that we do it's pathetic.

People almost seem to have this sense of entitlement that they are owed more business, work and income instead of actually dedicating themselves to working for it.

I can't disagree with any of your post Know1 because I feel the same way on that front.

I agree! The government has given hand outs to so many people that working people are getting apathetic. Why should I work when Joe next door gets everything for free? I've stood in the grocery line with my 5 lbs. of hamburger and the woman in front of me has a cart full of t-bones and she proudly pays for them with an EBT card before she walks out to her BMW! It's gonna get worse because sooner or later everyone will have an EBT card and be controlled by the government! The more we depend on the government, the more they will control us.

The point is that he said it wouldn't go over 8 % if we passed his stimulus package. Now that we have put our future in debt forever, have we really accomplished anything. Instead of spending us into oblivion, just let everyone have more of our own money. I don't wont to hear political word games about evil rich people. Just let eveyone have more of their own money. Businesses should be alowed to invest their money the way they want to creat jobs. The government doesn't create jobs unless you are a government employee. The idea that the government thinks they can spend your money smarter than you can is said by people who have never had a reall job(BHO) and have never run a business(BHO). It's none of his business what I spend my money on. He needs to concentrate on keeping me safe from nut jobs like Kim Jung Il ( eliminating misle defense is not my idea of keeping me safe)

You are not wrong! My husband is affiliated with one of the world's largest construction companies (he's a Sr HSE Specialist). He goes in early on Monday's because he has a meeting to attend first thing. He was unusually quiet this morning at breakfast and didn't seem to be very hungry. A wife knows when something is bothering their soul mate. I said, "Gee, Hon, you sure seem to be doing some serious thinking this morning." He looked across at me and said, "This is the kind of morning I hate to face because I will get the list of people who are to be laid off this week; 500 will be laid off by the last of August. I know them and most of them are people who have worked their butts off. They are going to suffer if they can't find another job real soon."

He was on the computer for hours yesterday afternoon; this morning when I came in and awoke the computer he had forgotten to log off, the last page he looked at popped up and I found out what he did yesterday. He had been online looking at the list of company jobs that are available, throughout the United States, searching for something that would help the people who will be laid off. Most of the jobs were located overseas and some were in the Power sector in Texas. We will pray for them every day because we know that things will be tough for them. Innocent victims of a screwed up government.

Yes and 50% of that was/is caused by OSHA going overboard on safety practices,I worked on an offshore drilling rig in the 70's and early 80's and we worked our tails off and got things done, today it takes them 4 times as long to do what we used to accomplish because of safety laws. The same applies in construction that I work in today, being safe is great, but some things are totally ridiculous.
I had my own small company for close to 25 years and an extremely hard working carpentry crew of White American Citizens,I would have matched my guys against any crew from Mexico or anywhere else on earth and whipped their rearends plus put out better quality than the garbage these "Cheap" laborers they allow illegally into our country.
If you think giving our jobs to illegals and sending them offshore, then reselling the product back to us is the answer then you are whacked in the head.Lowering wages while the cost of living goes up is only pushing more people into poverty. The great Dems that love to hand out govt checks to the "Needy" are as much at fault for those they lay around for a handout as any, meanwhile they tax to death those of us who will and can work hard.
The great messiah Obama is now digging up the past on CIA interrigations to cover up his own shortcomings, nice publicity stunt, but some of us can see the truth.

Re: 26 year high in Unemployment

Work harder fellas, millions on welfare arecounting on you. As soon as Wonder-Idiot get's done it will have to change to billions counting on you. He's spending money that no way in hell my kids, grandkids will ever be able to pay back. Inflation will hit double digits. Give 20 billion to some third world country for food? Here is a thought, rent em U-Hauls and move em closer to where food can actualy be grown instead of keep funding progrmas that are teaching the idiots in third world countries to grow food in the "DESERT" Pure genius i'm tellin ya, pure genius. Try to grow food in the most inhospitable place on earth. I wish I would have thought of that.

Deficits unlike anything modern history has ever seen is just right around the corner. Already in six short months he has topped the Bush administrations 8 year total. I sure can't wait to see the deficit at the end of four years!! Did he look back on history to other Presidents who tried and spend their way out of a recession/depression? He does understand the impact of tossing a couple trillion dollars of previously uncirculated money into an open economy, doesn't he? I mean c'mon, basic economics that most of us learned by 10th. grade.

Democrat controlled senate and white house. I guess the left should be careful of what they ask for, they just may get it.

Re: 26 year high in Unemployment

I worked in the building industry for many years. I remember the superintendant coming through the subdivision telling us that osha or workmanscomp were in the area and you should have seen eveyone scatter. That place was deserted in seconds. Even the cleaning crews took off. Of course there was the time osha came on the scene and told the super that he could not take down the temp hand rail on the stairs until the permenant one was put up. Now does that make sense? Heavy hand of government right there.
