I just wonder...
Will Walter Cronkite get as much national mourning and press as Michael Jackson did?
Will Congress take a moment of silence for him?
Talk about an iconic American figure in the 20th Century. His heyday was obviously before my time, but being a bit of a history buff through high school and college, it seems to me that Walter was always the rock in some of this country's tough times. Kennedy's death, Apollo 13, Vietnam, and the list goes on. A calm, steady, and reassuring voice for the entire nation back then...
But I guess his lack of being a freakshow makes it less newsworthy than a true American hero, like MJ.![]()
RIP, Uncle Walter.
The funny thing about the OLD GUARD............you really NEVER knew their politics......he was one of the GREAT ones.........I just wonder...

RIP, Uncle Walter.
Could you imagine ANYONE in today's media being "A calm, steady, and reassuring voice for the entire nation".
Later,
Geo
Good post I agree.
I don't remember the exact name of the show, but back before we had satellite and cable tv with 500 channels,Walter had a Sunday Morning show that I enjoyed watching and listening to his calming voice.
It's a shame that a weirdo child molester gets more press coverage and honors than an Icon like Cronkite,a sex symbal like Farrah Fawcett,or a great salesman like Billy Mays.
I agree Brian...kinda shows what hollywood has to sell and it's all about selling the in thing. I'm glad the circus is over...
He is one of the reasons we lost in Vietnam. After the Tet Offensive by the communists which we defeated, Cronkrite came on the air and said that at best it's a stale mate. Communist comaders have said since than that their will was nearly broken until our media did some good work for them. It gave them new hope for victory. If you want to believe a communist(which we now have as one of our Czars), the media is responsible for prolonging the war and costing many more lives. They need to report facts not give opinion.
I had a brother killed in Kaison and another that was shot up two different times in an Airborne special forces unit.He went to Vietnam a decent guy and came back a totally different person who eventually died as a direct result of that war,if you call drinking yourself to death a direct result..While I blame the American Media for swaying opinion with deception plenty of times,I do not personally think Walter Kronkite caused the end result.I can think of plenty of reasons, our inept leadership being one,but to lay the whole war on one person is completely ridiculous. He is one of the reasons we lost in Vietnam. I'll take Walter Kronkite over Michael Jackson any day of the week.
Scott you are right on one front as Walter retired he came out of the closet so to speak.
He was a serious leftwinger and probably always was. All that beind said though you must admit while he was on the air and doing his job he pretty much called it down the middle and left his politics out of it. This is something very very few journalist can do today, for that I will admire and respect the man's legacy as a top notch newsman.
Sorry for your losses and I appreciate your families sacrifice for our country.I had a brother killed in Kaison and another that was shot up two different times in an Airborne special forces unit.He went to Vietnam a decent guy and came back a totally different person who eventually died as a direct result of that war,if you call drinking yourself to death a direct result..While I blame the American Media for swaying opinion with deception plenty of times,I do not personally think Walter Kronkite caused the end result.I can think of plenty of reasons, our inept leadership being one,but to lay the whole war on one person is completely ridiculous.

I agree that it would be ridiculus to put the entire war on one man thats why I said that he was one of the reasons, not the reason. Ho chi min said that the communist would loose many and the Americans would loose few but that the communists would win because they would not give up and America would loose the will to fight. Our media played an important role in making that philosophy work for them. It is now the same philosophy that communists, third world thugs and terrorists around the world use against us.
Kyfanatic, I am so sorry for your loss. The men and women that put on the uniforms of the armed forces are what make this country the most powerful nation on the earth. I respect them and thank them for their service.
Same philosophy that the elected by some, muslim ,socialist ,person who calls himself president uses.
