I would not have shot the dog, but would have taken him straight to a vet, with a request as the owner to have him put to sleep. In my own opinion, a dog that ever executes such an unprovoked attack on a human, has shown a portion of his behavior that simpy can not be tolerated. I've had dogs, and loved them, would do anything for them, and missed them bad when they were either lost, or it was just their time to go. But, to me, as the master, and the one who provides the roof and food the pup lives under and with, when I see such a thing happen, then I think I have the responsibility to insure it can never happen again. Instinct or not, I think the attack on a child is well beyond tolerance.
