As far as the program is concerned, as long as parts are still available I've always been under the impression that it's "cheaper to keep her", instead of forking out money for interest on a loan, higher taxes, higher insurance rates, etc. And you know just because you get a newer vehicle doesn't mean you're not going to have repair bills, along WITH what is now a monthly payment.

Not enthused about this program, just my two cents worth, but I do think Hurricane had a great idea!
Part of the program requires the scrappers who take the trade in cars to DESTROY the drivetrains and useable parts.......TOTALLY ASENINE, if you ask me.

So you trade in a clunker, and anything useable for junkyard parts cannot be used.........This really hurts the little guy who CANNOT afford a new car and drives something 10 years old, and used junkyard parts to keep it running..........For years, that is JUST what I did.

Great point. My wife and I were talking about this the other day. Just more of the new big brother Demonut administration telling America what they are going to do. They want all these little toy cars out on the road running on tofu oil, what a joke. Guys we gotta get the voters with sense to the polls and get these idiot Democrats out of office or this country is DOOMED.

I'm kicking it around. What if I went to the junk yard and bought a $400 car that just barely moves, and as soon as paid for drive it right to the trade in dealer? That sounds to me like a 1000% return on investment the same day.

Wife tried to trade me in......over 10 years.....get way less that 10 mpg, but the dealer said the roller skates she had me wear did not qualify me as a wheeled vehicle. I about passed out when she attached my license plate.

The traded car had to have been registered and insured the full year before.

    * Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
    * Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
    * Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
    * Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
    * You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase
    * Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
    * The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.

My 93 Caravan is paid for. The reason I am still driving it is because I can't afford another car payment. Why in the world would I want to trade it in for a car payment I can't afford? Especially in this economy. These guys in the administration think they got all the answers. What a joke. This isn't about helping poor folks out. If that were the case they would have allowed you to keep more of your own money. No this is about global warming. Thats why these clunkers are being destroyed and being replaced by more environment friendly cars. Oh, I was told that my clunker doesn't count.

LOL, yeah that wouldn't be to bad of a program at all.

Wonder what criteria you would have to meet to qualify for such a program?

Well since the government owns GM, they need to get the business going. What better way than to develop a program to make people buy cars? It makes good business sense and was proven previously by Hitler. The Volkswagen "Peoples Car" was an affordable car for the average person to buy. The government can recoup their investment in GM. This rebate program will work with other auto makers but GM has the best deals out there with incentives. Then Hitler ordered the construction of the autobahns. (Hi speed interstates that improved transportation throughout Germany). This improvement boosted their economy tremendously. The rest is history!

The pictures I've seen on the news regarding this program, and some of the auto's with writing's on their windshield they spells "clunker", let me tell you what folks, a lot (most of) those vehicles weren't clunkers by any stretch. Most of the auto's I saw had paint jobs that could still be waxed and taken care of. Looks to me like auto's with less than 100,000 miles are being traded. Heck from where I come from if you have something that is considered a clunker but still safe to drive you sell it to some young person at a very VERY reasonable price, or maybe give it/sell it to a friend or family member for a bargain who's down on their luck and in need of some transportation.

Nobama's plans continue to tick me off.

Keep feeding the idea that the gubment will take care of everything and more people will jump on board of gubment healthcare. It's another tactic to dumb down the masses. At least thats my take on it....
