    Re: Stoner

Hey Stoner, Bourbonbales; I'm a recent transplant here in Paris, and I've been doing a lot of exploring on the lower stretches of the creek. Was entertaining clients and family last Sat. in the canoes going upstream from the bypass. Went past PAWS, went past the ball park, was doing a portage of the sandbar to keep going upstream when our trip was interrupted by 9mm fire from the local police dept. firing range behind the dump. Now, you boys turned me on to the Friends of Stoner creek, the purpose of which is to encourage folks to enjoy this truly special resource. My guests were shocked, and frankly scared until I told them that this was actually law enforcement. I don't have trash pickup, so I go to the dump once a week. Last time I was there I reconed the range. There are targets and a place to park, but what I did'nt see was safety measures to keep shots from passing over the creek itself. Mind you, it's not the best view from the transfer station, but I didn't see anything behind the human silhouette targets. (i.e. pile of earth, etc.) I was thinking about calling the Dept. to see if they scheduled this activity so I could explore this stretch without getting a free haircut. Am I worrying about nothing and just being a puss? Welcome to Bourbon Co.? It can't be good for tourism...my friends wanted to leave. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the board,
I have never been on that part of the creek, but do remember them having a firing range over there.
You have a valid concern that could be answered with a call to the police command center 987-2100. Not much help to you but would recommend that you consider the upper portion of the creek or Frymans.
Both are scenic and with the rain we've had this summer there should be a lot of color in the leaves when fall gets here.

Stoner, thanks for the number and the advice. I've explored Ike's and Fryman's and found the fishing to be fair at best. I know there's big fish in these backed up stretches, but the traffic and the pressure make me want try places where most folks don't want to go. I'm amazed really how much water there is in Paris to check out. So far, I've stumbled on some pretty interesting fishing, but it's not like the Elkhorn or the Salt where I was raised. Thanks again.

I would definately give the folks at the police derpartment a call and express your concerns. I am sure they will be happy to advise you on any saftety issues. I agree with stoner as far as that stretch of the creek goes. I have only been on the water in that area a handful of times and there are alot more productive fishing and scenic areas as well. If you decide to go the stretch of water from the bypass to the dam in town again i would avoid going up houston creek to the right before you get to the dam. If you are willing to do a little more work to get in the water there are some other access points on upper and lower stoner. (pm me) since you are new to the area i would check out the licking river and hinkston creeks as well. If you google map paris you can use the terrain mapping to get an idea of some of the other creeks and where they are in the area. If i can be of any help let me know.
