HAVEN'T FISHED THERE IN 10 yrs., but it used to be a great place to catch bass. I have a friend that caught a nember of 8# and 9# in early spring and I have caught lots of 1 -3 pounders this time of year on the breaks (that is depth breaks) this time of year. Good fishing. Let me know how you do. It is also a good bluegill lake if the bass ain't bitin.

Caught a 6.5 lb bass there last week, nice fish. Caught on a watermelon/red flake baby brush hog T-rigged with a 1/8 oz sinker. Don't forget the yellow spike-it on the tail (makes all the difference). Caught most of our fish on mainlake secondary points in 10-15 ft. of water. Good luck!

I live 30 miles from there. I purposely sold my bass boat that was small enough to be on the lake and bought another, bigger boat, just so it was illegal for me to go to the lake!!!

I can not say this strongly enough, I HATE THAT LAKE!!!!

That said, in the spring, I have seen huge sacks brought in for tournament weigh ins, and in the summer, the only good fish I ever hear about come at night. So if you like night fishing, you could possibly do well. Well, you could do well even in the day. But I also saw your post on Rough, and Rough fishes a lot easier for me than does Malone.

You might try Nolin. I've fished it a few times, and it is also more fun than Malone, Though I hear Nolin is tough on weekends, and during the daytime in the summer.

I wish you luck, what ever you decide, Tight lines,

i understand about the boat issue. most of us that fish that lake think it is a silly rule. I can assure you there are boats running the lake every day that are illegal. Just because you have a 200 or 250 doesn't mean you have to run it wide open. Only a couple spots on that lake you can do that anyway. It just takes some common sense.
As far as the fishing, you are correct. Seems most the bigger fish are caught at night. after may it is a very tough lake during the day. There is a open friday night tourney each week and several every other week on saturday nights. Not uncommon at all to see several 6 or 7 lb fish brought to the scale. I have been lucky enough to do it myself several times.
Me and a fishing buddy of mine brought in close to 19 lbs one night on 3 fish limit.
fished a tourney there last week and 21 lbs on 5 fish limit won. 18 lbs was second.

From my understanding, the engine size has nothing to do with the size of the lake. I was told they did this so there would not be larger tournaments on the lake. The locals did not want tournaments with 100+ boats there on the weekends. They tried changing the law last year, but too many locals protested.

    mkm,

I have a lot of friends/aquaintances that have cabins on the lake. They all say it is a safty issue. But I can assure you, and I have also taken this to our state legislator from Greenville, it is not the size of the motor. I have a 21 foot triton, that is OK, but I have a 225 opti, and that size is prohibited. They did just recently (last 2 years) change the law to allow 200 hp motors from the weekend after labor day to the weekend before memorial day.

As jsparks says, it isn't the motor size, but the speed that is at issue. I had a 18 feet long Stratos, and a 150 hp Evenrude, but I can tell you, it still ran too fast for most of that lake. I came through the main lake, where the lake narrows, and two pontoons were tied together, nose to nose, in the middle of the lake, with swimmers behind each of them. I had nothing to do but shut it down, and try to idle past the swimmers. They had at least 75% of the lake blocked with just narrow passages on each end of their configuration. Very dangerous.

If they are after safety, what they need is a speed limit. This would require the water patrol officers to use radar guns. However, the patrol seems to prefer just writing tickets based upon the decal on the cowling. Of course most of the regulars that fish tournaments there 'cheat', lol by changing the decals and running bigger motors with a lower decal. The patrol officers don't seem to want to be bothered by actually checking the motor itself.

BTW, I say the cheat because the tournaments say they have to follow local law, or some other type rule similar to this, and they are not following the law, their by making themselves cheaters. Most get real upset. They think cheating is only stock piling fish in baskets. But breaking a tournament rule is breaking the rules... their by cheating. Pure and simple logic.

    tight lines,

    HDF
