Re: Lake Herrington...Big Cats, and Bass, or NO?

The bass in this lake are no where near small in my opinion. It is hard to find healthier fish this side of KY lake in the state. There are some very big spots in Herrington as well. I have caught some very nice flatheads and channel cats in the river at Herrington in years past.

Re: Lake Herrington...Big Cats, and Bass, or NO?

I would totally disregard what someone mentioned earlier in the thread..........there are BIG bass in Herrington. THEY ARE IN THERE FOR SURE! It's just a matter of knowing when and where to fish the lake at certain times during the year. My partner and I run the KY-11 Division of USA Bassin on Herrington and we fish several of the Open tournaments as well (out of Pandora), and Coffey's Cove. In our circuit alone, numerous 3s, 4s, and 5lbers were weighed in -- along with some 6s, 7s, and 8s in other tournaments outside our circuit. Last year, there was a 10lber caught in Herrington.

The guys catching the bigger fish know where there are -- they don't just stumble upon them by accident (that's why certain individuals and teams excel in the tourneys).

There are plenty of smaller fish in Herrington, but there is also an abundance of keeper 12" fish -- along with some toads. Don't ever let anyone tell you there aren't big bass in Herrington........they just don't fish the lake at its seasonal prime or they're not making the correct presentations.

As for catfish, I only catch em by accident when bass fishing. Good luck.

I don't know Herrington all that well, but I can assure you that there are some very nice bass & cats also in it. I have caught several very nice healthy fat as can be bass from Herrington. If I knew it better it would probably be my favorite lake. About the only thing I don't like about it is all the trash(huge logs) floating in it to wipe a lower unit out lol & I'msure anyone else that fishes it.

Re: Lake Herrington...Big Cats, and Bass, or NO?

From the looks of it there are plenty of bass, and bass guys down at Herrington. I guess it's a good time to broaden my fishing horizon a little. Besides, I've been wanting a change of scenery.

As far as the Cats go, surely there's a few cat guys out on that big lake. I guess when I get down there I'll just strike up convo with the guys in the bait shops, and what not.

You boys asking about "where" to catch the big fish might as well stop asking...they won't tell you. And if they do tell you...it's probably miles away from where their real spots are

Amen Mr. Young. Throw everything and the bath tub at them! They'll bite one of them sooner or later.

Re: Lake Herrington...Big Cats, and Bass, or NO?

Don't know about Blue Cats, but there's definitely some sows of the other (catfish) versions. Bass .... yep, they're in there. My biggest (landed) was 7lbs ... have hooked others that were bigger.
Herrington is one of the most productive Bass waters in the state, according to KDFWR. You've just got to learn the lake, and pay your dues (time) to figure them out.
If you're going to be living around Kennedy Bridge ... you're in the area of one of the biggest community holes on the lake ... LOL !! Seriously, just go down there on any tourney night and count the number of boats that flog those two banks to death ... LOL !!
Biggest I've ever heard of, coming from Herrington (Bass), supposedly weighed 12lbs ... but, that was years ago. Wouldn't surprise me if more 8lb Bass died of old age, than were ever caught from there. You'd be surprised at the size of the Crappie there, too.
All the standard baits & techniques will work on Herrington ... you just have to fish it often, to keep up with their movements (depth). I've caught Bass from 1ft deep to 30ft deep ... depending on conditions (weather/season/water level/etc).
Just use your imagination & knowledge, as to what bait & technique to use on whatever type of bank you fish. And don't be afraid to throw cranks at night ... over 12-15ft depths of water ... parallel to the bank. Not even a bad idea to "worm fish" that bank, then turn around and crank it. And don't think that, just because you are the 5th boat in a line, down a stretch of bank .... that you probably aren't going to get a chance at a fish. There's been many a night that I've fished a bank, behind several other boats, and caught fish ... sometimes within casting distance behind a boat !! Fish your plastics slow ... fish your cranks "Stop & go" ... (can't give you any hints about other baits, never used'em ... LOL )
