    Re: The Ugly American

Pappy I have to agree. When ever I go out fishing or hunting I always make it a point to bring trash out with me. Every creek, river, lake ,WMA, boat ramp, park ,etc etc etc. has more trash on the ground than there is in the nearest trash can. If we all pick up just one thing and take it with us, it will make a dramatic difference.

I was in NC last month and the 3City lakes don't have Bank Fishing at all.Guess they got smart. When i lived in MI we bank fished in April for years, guess what. Not Any More There and most people cleaned up more than they had too but they couldn't keep up with all the drunks that didn't.I aways leave a camp site better than when i got there because i pick up the butts from the last camper.Bank fishing will go away if anglers don't pick up.We all could lose so lets all do more and pray we keep what we have for the next generation.Terry Adolph

I live off a fairly busy road, and I am tired as S@#* of picking up trash everytime I mow! How can people justify throwing out trash all over lakes and peoples lawns? CRAZY! It is something that is definiteliy worse out here than back out west. I never remember seeing the trash I see here while growing up out there. It's definitely hereditary!

I followed a dodge caravan minivan recently with a mother and 4 young kids throwing candy wrappers, burger king garbage, and a few more items out as we went for several miles, bouncing off my trucks windshield. This irks me to no end as I have alot of road frontage on my farm on two different roads. When we finally got to a redlight in town,I pulled up beside the van and let the mother know how I felt about littering, how it's pure laziness not to put trash in a trashcan, and how she was a good role model for her children.
That said kygorski, don't group all us "HillBilly's" into one group,I see as many Buckeyes from the city riding around on lakes tossing garbage out on the water,I see city folks from everywhere throwing garbage out along the highways, and I bank fish alot with my children and we always clean up what we can.My kids have a hissy if they see someone litter,it's all in how you teach your children and behave yourself.

IMO, city folks are the worst. The more urban and/or lower income an area the more trashy it is. Is it cultural? education? or their attitude is that they just plain don't care?

I agree that the problem seems to be more urban. I've notice in my travels in the western parts of the U.S. - Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Montana - and Europe you just do not see what I call the "disposal society" mindset. Perhaps the individuals that live in these areas more appreciate and respect their natural surroundings and history. When I was growing up, I had access to a relative's lake in western KY and ultimatley was denied access because of the trash other people were leaving behind.

Thanks Terry!! and I mean that. It is amazing how many people who think that ciggarette butts are not litter!!! In fact, there is one guy, that I consider a friend, who I have quit allowing to go fishing with me because he would not put his cig. butts out in a can or water bottle. I refuse to help create the problem that I have been fighting for so long. My father-in-law has finally, at least at my house, gotten the message. I guess he got embarrassed that I would always pick his butts up off the lawn and throw them away, so he now either extinguishes the cig. and puts the butt in his pocket to throw away later or just doesn't smoke here. He has always respected that we don't smoke, and doesn't smoke in our house.

I am encouraged to see other people recognizing cig. butts as litter.

    Tight lines my friend,

All of which has been thrown out of car windows since Monday evening when I picked up lawn trash to put in the garbage can for the regular Tuesday pick up day. Granted, today was a little worse then normal but a week never goes by that I don't have to pick up someone else'ss trash. Some people are just inconsiderate slobs.

I have to do the same and my yard is one of the middle homes on my street. I pick up broken glass, cigs and fast food bags!! I also go into the street to pick up stuff that will blow into my yard eventually.
