Re: Casting Elbow..Can this be REAL?

Ahhh...I'm fighting this as we speak also, but I have it in both arms

Let me tell you, it ain't no fun when you have reservations about setting the hook. It has really affected my fishing not to mention my work, playing with the kids, almost everything I used to do a year ago without even giving it a thought.

I can thank Hurricane Ike and the ice storm for my affliction. I finally had enough of the pain and went to a physical therapist. Have done 5 of the 6 treatments so far (last one tomorrow) and it has helped some but not as much as I was hoping for. DO get one (or two in my case) of those arm bands, but make sure you get the ones that have some type of pressure point built into them to put pressure on the muscle so your inflamed tendon can have a rest.

Stretching and cross-tendon massage is a must EVERYDAY to get this beast under control. I highly doubt that it will ever be "normal" again so I will just have to grin and bear it.

BTW I have found when you turn 40, things don't heal like they used to Good luck on your speedy recovery and keep fishing

    TO ALL:
Ish is 55, and used to get the same quite often with some fierce pain. Worst ever was a episode that took over 1.5 years to get rid of in my wrists. Here's what my doc told me, and it has worked great. 1 each 81 mg Bayer baby aspirin per day helps to reduce inflamation and prevent it in joints and muscles. (CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR FIRST). Second, when a flare up occurs, do the extremes to make it get well fast. Extremely hot tub of water, hot as you can stand soaking in it with out getting burnt for up to 5 minutes. Pull elbow out of the hot water, and immediately either emmerse in a tub of ice water, or immediately apply a big ice bag.

I have had instances where an ankle flared up so bad I couldn't walk on it, the above hot and cold water routine for about an hour, switching back and forth every 5-10 minutes, usually takes out the pain and inflamation with a single hour long session. Had problems with both wrists so bad I had to wrap them like a boxer does to go fishing. Again, a one hour session on each wrist did the trick, and the aspirin has done a great job keeping it away.

Worked for me, advice came to me from a sports physician.

Thanks guys for all the information. Tell me more about this "elbow strap"....what's it called or how do I describe it to the sales clerk?

Going to see my doctor later this week for my annual physical and will have him take a look at my elbow as well.

They are tennis elbow bands. I also had it terrible & it took several monthys to heal. I wore a tennis elbow band & fished on. It hasn't bothered me in years. I litterally threw a rod out into the lake because my tendons were so inflamed that I had very little grip left. Doctor told me to get one & take it off only when going to bed at night & I did & am fully recovered for about 5 years now. I had it so bad I sold my new boat & thought I was done for good. Thankfully I was wrong. They 100% work.

yes it is real. I am a nurse and I suffer from it every year usually late summer to early winter. It is usually associated with tendinitis related to overexhertion of the tendons in your elbow. It can get so inflammed it will irritate the nerve in your elbow also and can cause shooting pain down your arm especially if you close your fist up tightly. Only treatment is anti inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen and rest. Unfortunately I get no rest due to constant work with my hands such as writing and favorite past time of fishing. Compression helps with mine while fishing. Take ace wrap and wrap you elbow firmly but not too tight. Alternate casting cranks and spinnerbaits with worm fishing and other slower techniques also helps with the pain and fish till it feels like it's gonna fall off

Most drugstores will have them with the ankle and knee braces. Will say something like "Elbow brace for tendonitis" or something similar. Generally costs around $15-$20.
