What are you fishing for? I was down there a couple weeks ago when the conditions were similar to how they are now. There were like 9 of us that did a float trip from the dam to rock house. I was in a 16 ft boat the others in tubes and canoes. We caught alot of fish. Let me know what type of fishing you plan on doing and Ill let you know what worked for us, we caught like 7 or 8 different species of fish.

We're fishing for trout mostly. But we will have a 14 year old boy with us so any tips for catching more fish is appreciated.

The plan has changed from drifting from the dam to Winfrey's Ferry. I have been on the river a couple times in a canoe... just want to take my jon boat this time.

I've tried to hookup a shuttle a couple times and have not been too lucky.

no go on the trolling motor the current is just to stiff, and it would drain your battery double time.

fishing has been good down there. you'll catch them all over. there are spots that didn't produce much last year that are offering tons of trout and there are areas that produced in years past that seem flat empty. if you fish is alot you can pretty much pick the spots where the big ones are holding...you may have to fish longer and be more strategic about it...and there are areas where you can just catch lots of fish without the size...of course there are always exceptions.

You got me curious... I can think of the following:

bows
browns
whites
eyes
sauger
striper? - that would be some serious fun in a float tube.

I have caught all of the above on the C-Land river in one day. . . from a canoe

I'll never forget the trip I mistakenly took a giant school of spawning carp as a school of striper. I about wet myself coming down river thinking I was headed for PAYDAY. They were in a run exploding everywhere and when 3 to 4 of them stick together like they do they look like one giant 50+ pound fish under the water. Talk about going from Happy to SAD real quick...lol.

Aside from all the fish already listed in this post I can add smallmouth to the list. A 2.5 pounder ate a 10 inch sucker I was pulling on a board down around Cloyds Landing a few years back. I've never caught crappie/largemouth/catfish out of the river before. I think the warmer water brings up all kinds of species.

We took a guy who asked are there any largemouth in the CR? I said..."No". First fish he caught was a largemouth. So my large mouth was full of foot!

It was tough out on the ol Cumberland this weekend. Floated from the dam to Winfreys Ferry (about 18 miles I think). I caught 40 trout and my two friends caught 20 each. The biggest of the day was a 19" brown that was pretty fat.

Did best on fly fishing gear, especially zebra midges.

Also caught a bonus big ol 14 inch crappie.
