shakey head technique????

need some tips on how to fish the shakey head rig effectively. what is the best type worm, rod, reel, and pound test line to use. ive been using a baitcaster with 14lb line and not having any luck. ive heard to many good things about it to just give up on it.

Zoom shaky worm, medium to medium-heavy rod (depending on what you like for light line and light weight applications -- I use a medium), 2000-3000 size spinning reel (I use a Shimano Stradic 2500MgFB), 6-10lb test fluorocarbon (I wouldn't go much heavier). Some folks use lighter braid with a fluorocarbon leader -- I don't. Whatever works for you.....

.......and most importantly, DO NOT OVERFISH IT! Let the worm do the work for you.....

when you say dont over fish it, do you mean keeping it still just as much as working the bait?

Here's my set up, after guys use it they want exactly what I have for some reason:
7'2" Drop Shot Carrot Stix Rod Medium Heavy
Shimano Symetre 2500fyj
8 or 10# Seaguar InvizX fluro (fluro is a must IMO)
3/16th oz Spot remover hooks (Buckeye Lures) I mold my own I special ordered the mold
Now....Worms
Net Bait T-Mac
Zoom trick worm
Charmers shakey worms
I almost always use straight tail (finesse)

Now when the 3/16 seem too light due to wind I will use a tru tungsten worm that has the tungsten molded into it and it gives me enough feel, stick with green worms of any flavor/color combination.

You don't "have" to do anything special you can work it just like a texas rig dragging it on the bottom but... when you drag it up next to something stop and shake your rod tip a little , just like you were trying to lightly remove it from a snag. As it comes over stop it again .... hold on to your rod.... follow the Dave Stewart hook setting rule: 1st tap their picking it up, second tap there turning it around in their mouth (because they don't have hands) "that's when I own them", if you wait till the third that is when they are swallowing it. Nothing special the jig head/worm combination does most of the work for you. It is a great set up for kids, and the number one rig for the back of the boat (it's the most used rig for co-anglers on the professional tour)

Diddo on the Spot Remover heads...they are the best in my opinion. 1/8 oz if its not windy and 1/4 if it is. Zoom finesse worms or Gulp have worked well for me too, the Gulp's usually don't last very long though. I like using a 7 ft. medium rod and 8lb line also...I would go with flouro....but not P-Line.....it has too much memory. Gotta ditch the Baitcasting rig.....hard to do for me too!!!! Be patient with them and like others have said just fish them easy and shake them a little before you move it each time. Lots of times the bass just swim off with them so you gotta watch your line and make sure you get the slack out of your line before you set the hook. Good luck!

I wasn't big on the shakey head and anything slow until the beginning of the year and went out with a guy by the name of Chad Miles and he showed me how to successfully use the shakey head and I was hooked quickly!
The buckeye spot removers are by far the most productive out of any of the heads I have used but this is for any type of worm... Preferably the zoom finesse worm in watermelon candy and red bug depending on the time of year but they tend to be very productive... If you are wanting to change it up and throw a creature or a paca chunk or something I highly recommend Slongs Fishing Lures... They make a wide gap shakey head that works perfectly for this application... They have football or pt styles and I usually throw the football with a trigger craw IMO pretty good combo...
As far as set up I use a 7'-6" medium rod and spinning gear with seagar invisx as my line preference... Just a steady pull and not a hard hook set... Just my 2 cents...

Overworking means to move it a lot, I fish my shakeys fairly fast, almost like a jig, but also just letting it sit still for a little and then jst move it a touch, will sometimes trigger a bite. Let the fish tell you what and how they want it, give up the heavy line, I use Pline floro clear 10 lb on spining equip, The shakey head and wacky are my go to techniques, I prefer the Gitem Warlock, gitembaits.com and the ole zoom trick and finese worms.

Watch your line if its moving real up the slack and set the hook,my bigger fish i have caught i never felt or had time too feel a bite they just picked it up and started too swim away.Terry Adolph

thanks for the tips. looks like all i need to do different is start using my spinning rod wich is already set up with 8lb line. going to herrington sat night and if all else fails, ill give it a shot. thanks again

Unless you are on another good pattern already.... Don't wait to see if anything else produces. Go for the Shakey head first. My color choice for Herrington is Plum (ZOOM). The green color combos work well also. The bank at chimney rock marina launch has an old road bed that has been producing an easy limit for me every trip out. Good Luck tonight.
