I have been a crankbait/spinnerbait kind of fisherman for a while, and soft plastics. I have taken notice that all good fishermen throw jigs. I never have much, but recently I stocked up on some jigs and dressed em with trailers. I've thrown em and thrown em and never caught any till today. I finally caught a few fish on a jig and my confidence is starting to grow. I've heard that jigs opt for bigger fish. I know some people only fish jigs and rely on them solely, my confidence is not there yet. I just wanna get some ideas on what kind of jigs people like to throw and what kind of structure they like them in. I know there are football jigs and swim jigs and various other types I just want a good rundown of jigs and jig fishing...

Well number one thing that got me hooked on jigs was fishing them in a lake that had less than 1ft. of visiblity and a strong population of bass. Its really easy to gain confidence in a jig when theres fish on every piece of visible cover you can find. When the waters that dirty i like a 1/4oz black and blue or black and something with a #11 pork trailor. I think this looks like a dying bluegill. Most times when the waters 2ft. visibility and clearer im going for a crawfish imitator and to me thats the football jig in most cases. I mean theres so much more than can be said about jigs but first things first, if you want the confidence fish it in some really dirty water.

Com'on seriously your Fed Nation parter is one of the best jig fishermen around, and one of the only people I know that will have atleast 5 jigs tied on at any given time. If I had to stick with one jig company that had every color under the rainbow ( and if he dosnt have it he'll work with you to make it.) it would be Cumberland Pro Lures based out of Burnside. He has a jig for and application that you would need one. The HD jig is thier flipping which had a pointed wedge like head making it perfect to snake down through wood or bushes it also doubles over as a great swim jig that weaves through river grass and other types with no problems. Second he has the Pro Caster jig which has a flat head that skips exstremly easy it also sets natrually in the water imatating the exact angle a crawdad does when it's in a defensive position when fending itself from a preditor. Yet what's best about the Pro Caster is it seems to get hung up less in rock than other jigs. Lastly he makes a football head with a 90 degree line tie which when you stop dragging the jig it will rest and rock back giving the impression of once agian a crawdad fighting for his life. I like using his on deep structure and small rock and gravel type banks.

I personally like jigs from very shallow to very deep. I mostly fish them with a ZOOM SWIMMIN CHUNK. Sometimes fish them with a steady hop. Sometimes pop them with 3 or 4 times very high hops(strokin) letting them fall on a semi tight line for reaction bites.Some times just drag them. I caught them last night on a half ounce Brown Orange with a Rootbeer Pepper Green Zoom Swimmin Chunk with the tails dyed Chartreuse. A lot of times you can use a Brush Hog trailer & they will absolutley eat them up.

Also all of his jigs have Gamakatzu hooks in them, he also has a lot of other products spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and even striper baits.

These r also the jigs and shakey heads that were used by Brad Roberts to win the 2009 Forrest Wood Cup co-angler title.

Jigs, in my opinion, are THE most versatile bait out there and I think alot of the gentlemen on fishin.com would agree.

Just as important as colors, you do have to experiment with the trailers -- if the action of the trailer isn't right, the bass will have nothing to do with it. The trailer actions vary from season to season. Usually when the water is really cold, or really warm (like it is now across the state), I have had luck with swimming trailers like baby brush hogs and grubs. When the water is in the 60s and low to mid 70s, the fish seem to prefer a thick trailer that is going to diplace alot of water like Paca Chunks and Chigger Craws.

Jigs do catch alot of bigger fish as well. My best smallmouth and my biggest largemouth have come with a jig. Picking the right jig is developing a pattern with in itself -- trying to find just exactly what the fish like.

All I can say is stick with the jig. I guarantee that it will begin to pay off for you when you gain more experience and confidence with them. The jig is definitely my go-to bait, especially when the bite is tough and you have to fish slow. Good luck and good jig fishing.

I love Jigs they are one of my favorite styles of fishing. Really all forms of jigs are good. Just as long as their set up with a good trailer. My favorite brand names are just small local names the you would find in a local bait shop. I prefer them better than a booyah for ex. So good luck, glad you like em'.

Cumberland Pro is by far the best jig I have ever thrown. Brian Wilson knows what he is doing. There is a concept behind each of his 3 jig lineup.

HD Jig- phenominal flip/pitch bait with a superior hook and the pointed head really comes through grass and over structure like no other jig I have ever seen.


ProCaster- My favorite jig in the lineup. I used to throw all D&L jigs untill I discovered this one. Best head out there for skipping under docks and under brush. If you like to fish chunk rock, this ones for you. Resting position of this head design makes your trailer come to life....Just watch it in a fish tank!

Football- This is not a flat-eye model but, the rocking motion of the hig set forth by the angle of the hook itself produces far better than a flat eye model. Compare the 2 in a fish tank and you will see for yourself.



Brian has absolutly every color under the sun and if he doesnt have it, he will make it for you! My jig inventory consists of about 90% Cumberland Pro.

This year ive also started throwing mostly all of Brians jigs(Cumberland Pro) and ill always have AT LEAST 2 tied on because its my number 1 confidence bait...as RC5 and Jonas said,if he dont have it or cant make it then you probably dont need it...the 2 main reasons i love his jigs and have 2 boxes of them is because his jigs are the only ones that have the 2 wire guards and also a straight shanked gama hook in them
The HD Flippin jig is the best ive used and i cant say that ive hung up any more than 5 times this year with it...with its slick head design it drops right through any branches or cover youre flippin around without gettin hung up and the strong gama in it will always keep fish hooked up,i used this jig this year at the BFL on Barren to catch fish 3-1 behind my boater,when im flippin really the only color i use is barbed blk/blue and blk/chartuese with a green pumpkin or flippin blue big salty chunk
The Pro caster and Football head both also have the 2 wire guards and straight shank hook...I usually only throw the FB head when im fishing deep or when im fishing gravel type banks to keep that jig on the bottom as much as possible looking like a crawdad and tip it with Pacas or Chigger Craws...The Pro caster is what ill have on and throw the most because its the most versatile out of the bunch...i throw it around any kind of rock,ledges,boulders and even grass if im around it...It has a flat side on the bottom of the head that keeps it sitting just like a crawdad would in the water when its in a defense mode,i also like throwing this jig in a 1/2oz model and use it like a football head too,its really awesome especially with a big salty chunk

WOW! Thanks for all the feedback guys. One more question what kind of line do you guys use?...right now on my jig rod I've got 17# mono, but I've seen people using 20# flouro...which is better? Personally I like a little stretch, but maybe i'm wrong.

Bump down to 15lb seaguar and youll be fine,if your not around alot of rocks and things to rip your line up go to 12lb flouro...flipping i like 20lb XT and 17lb seaguar around wood and 65lb powerpro around grass...i find that the braid digs into wood and you can lose fish that way but cuts through the grass and gets them piggies em out

All my jigs came from a company out of Texas around Toledo Bend mainly BLK/Blue and Brown/orange. I like pork trailers most of the time but will throw on a paca chunk or brush hog. I also use 50# braid on my flippin rod for thick cover such as brush. I will get them out or break a rod trying.
