    8/19 bluegrass report

Went out this morning til about 2pm. The water was at 84-86. The wind was brutal! Caught 8 bass 3 of which were over the 18" slot. Biggest came in at 4.9lbs. I also talked to the guy up there doing the creel survey. According to him a lot of 5+lbs fish are being taken. Catfishing on the north end of bluegrass is well above avg. Most of thecats are being taken with cut bait right above deep grass. He has not seen any Muskie above the 36" size limit for the lakes. The survey guy said the guy who actually put the Muskie in fished loon pit a couple of Saturdays ago and saw 5 that would of been above or close to the 36" size limit! I've heard of them being caught on loon. And a lot of people I sorta know say they have seen them. But im not sure that what they really saw are the huge gar in loon. But the guy who actually put them in saying he saw them that big is great news! I want a Muskie!!!! None have been seen in bluegrass.

Where is Bluegrass and Loon. I am from southern IN and have never heard of them. Allways looking for new water to fish and the possible prospect of a muskie is very intriguing. Just curious as to the local. Thanks

Bluegrass Pit is off Boonville-NewHarmony Road. Take I-164 North out of Evansville and look for the Boonville-NewHarmony Road Exit. turn Right and Go East on Boonville NewHarmony Road. Go about 2/10 to 5/10th of a mile East and look for the lake on your Left. The Parking lot entrance is on your left. The Lake on the North Side of the Road is Bluegrass Pit. The lake on the South Side is Loon Pit. The parking lot entrance to loon pit is on your right side. When you go pass the natural gas pumping station you will be getting close to the parking lot entrance.

Note: the ramps have algae growing on the concrete and can be slippery.

I hope that the muskee are eating a lot of those gizzard shad.

I have not fished either of these pits this year but use to fish them a lot.

It's Called bluegrass fwa. There are 15+ pits to fish. Only a few you can get a boat in. And the ramps on bluegrass are not slick at all so far.

    Shane:
The only pits with concrete launch ramps are Bluegrass Pit (South end), Loon Pit (North End) and Otter Pit. All the other launch ramps are gravel or non exixtant on all the other pits in the Bluegrass FWA.

Muskee were stocked in Bluegrass Pit and Loon Pit. During high water events all three of these big pits are hydrologically connected via big culverts that run under Boonville New Harmony Road and Kansas Road. So Muskie could venture into Otter Pit if the area is flooded. Any fish that swims in the Ohio River can swim up Pigeon Creek and Bluegrass Creek and enter Otter pit during flooding events. So there can be a lot of trash fish in these pits. Gar, Bowfin and other River fish could exist in Otter Pit.

The Muskie will be fun to hook into.

I saw one small muskie last year hanging around the shoreline at Bluegrass Pit's launch ramp. It was not very big. Perhaps 12" or less in length. It was not a gar as I could tell by the shape and color on the sides of the fish.

I wonder if Northern Pike would survive in Bluegrass Pit? So far they have only stocked Muskie in these pits down here.

i think the guy doing surveys is a little crazy. It takes musky years to grow that large, there one of the slowest growing fish.. and i really dont believe everyone is catching 5lb bass either lol there not easy to come by in the bigger pits, i think you did a really good job to catch 3 good ones

Very well could be about the big fish. The survey guy seemed to just offer information. Oh, the questions asked were are you in favor of 18" size and 2 fish. Change the limit on gils and redear to 25. Forgot the others so they must not of mattered. All the bass were caught back in that H looking part of the pit over very thick grass/cover with a dbl silver blade black and purple spinner. Also found a site about the Muskie put in. A total of 1800 in the 2 pits size from 8-9.25" when released.
