Just back from KY Lake.........

Tough to catch keepers............but NOT tough to catch fish.

We hammered fish today and yesterday, but only managed a few keepers yesterday and a few today.........

We found a couple places where white and yellow bass here HAMMERING shad. Under the shad, we found bass..........LOTS of them. We still caught a TON of whites and yellows, but the bonus bass were well worth the weeding out.

We also caught a few catfish, perch, etc, etc..........

I'm headed back down in a few weeks.........

BTW........if you've never taken Dave Stewarts Lake Familiarization and Water Elimination..........TAKE IT.........well worth the bucks.

BTW BTW..........While driving to KY I slowed down to 65 mph.....and added 3 mpg. ONLY saves about 50 bucks, but 50 bucks is 50 bucks.

That lake is sure full of buck largemouths this year. I remember back in the spring catching bunches up in the bays and I have fished a couple of nights in the last month and they are showing up at night too. I used to think that night fishing KY was more of a trophy hunt in that you caught fewer but quality rather than numbers but this year is definitely different.

With you finding other fish up on the shad it sounds like some of the channel fish might be moving up shallower earlier this year. I have a feeling we are in for an early fall.

Dave's class is incredible. I took it in early August and learned so much. I am dying to spend some time on the water with my newly stretched brain and I hope this weekend I will get to do so.

Finally, on the mpg. When gas hit $4 I was setting my cruise on 65 down from my norm of 72 - 74 and I noticed 2 -3 mpg difference. This does add up on a 400 mile round tirp.

You know..........a couple other things about the trip that I forgot to post.

The channel catfish were up in with the shad also. We caught 3-4 nice channel cats, with the best being about 8lbs.......FUN.

Also, a couple boys in a HOT ROD tourney rig, cut in front of us between the shadball we were fishing and the bank. I could hear the one guy saying "don't worry........they're fishing for Crappie......."

I yelled back over and said.........NOPE we're not crappie fishing.......THEN martinson and I hooked one of MANY doubles for the day.

We watched them for about an hour, while they flipped the bank ALL the way around the area we were fishing........When they finally got back around to us and asked how we were doing.........We told them..........THEY didn't believe us........but we did catch another DOUBLE while talking to them .

It was classic.

Ledges George Ledges George Ledges George, hit those ledges and humps I showed you to find the big ones. Dave has had 10 over 8 on the ledges this summer. Fish them the same way I showed you this spring with big 10" and 12" worms C rigged and T rigged, big jigs and big crankbaits and hang on. Find about 5 of them close together and shotgun them because it is a timing thing but they will be there feeding sometime during the day.

I've found that if I slow to 55 or even 60, I add many, many more miles per gallon.

Guys-

I was down at Barkley/Kentucky as well this weekend. What amazing weather!!!!

My Dad and I had a great 3 days. We boated about 100 bass fishing 9 hours or so a day. Humps and points around main river channel produced fish but we had little luck with size. Generally, we did not come across fish actively feeding on any hump

We found most of our fish on pea gravel banks on Kentucky. I had three smallies about 3lbs each. I caught one on a mag heavy Gloomis Carolina rig rod. This three pound smallie put up more fight then a 6.2 largmouth down on Guntersville in May on the same rod. These three smallies made my trip; I did not expect to catch any of my brown friends.

I normally catch more fish on Barkley then KY but not this time. KYL by a long shot. We caught them on C-rigs, T-rigs, rattletraps, sammy's, spinnerbait and buzzbaits.

Can't say enough about how nice a trip it was for late August and pumped me up for Smallies on Dale this winter
