Cove Lake...Lexington's best kept secret!!!

If you're looking for a good spot to do some bank fishing near Lexington, you'd be silly to think about any place other than Cove Lake. Cove Lake is a back water of Jacobson Reservior, it can be found on google maps by searching Cove Lake Apartments. On the map it's not listed as Cove Lake, but the body of water is easily visible on the map, right off of Squires Rd. This body of water is absoutely full of huge Cats, Bass, and Carp! I've seen several guys catch 30lb+ Cats, and Carp. Even if you're having a bad day fishing, it's fun to watch the HUGE carp jumping all over the place. But don't get too complacent, I've lost a couple poles that way. Anyway, I hope this might help somebody in, or traveling to the Lexington area. My friends and I have fished this area for years, when we talk to other Lexingtonians about the fishing there, nobody's heard of the place.

I'm moving down to Herrington Lake and my friends are too buzy with new babies and married life to get out. I figured somebody should be enjoying the good fishing at Cove Lake.

I'm up and down that section of Squires quite often. I'll start looking for the crowds.

Hey, if you're reading this and plan on fishing Cove Lake, please pick up your trash and take it with you when you leave. High water floats the garbage over to the club lake and I don't really like looking at it and picking it up... Thanks!

Your welcome! We stock those fish (except those carp) at the club and they swim through the culvert during high water to get there. Same thing happens over at Jacobson Park....be careful police officers will run you off if your parking on Squires.

I've always wondered what the deal was with that big lake across Squires, don't you have to a member of a club to fish there or something?

Yeah the club is Lake Ellerslie Fishing Club and I got a Blue out of there several years ago that went 45lbs.

I grew up a little ways from cove lake. The run off area on squires is about 4.5 feet deep at it's deepest. when the weather gets hot it all but dries up.
I too have fished it for years (before I became a member of Lake "E") and the biggest fish I have ever seen come out of there was a 2.5lb catfish. I have never seen a big cat or bass or carp come out of there. Never even heard about such a thing until this post. I think if people want to fish a run off pond they should go down in front of the mall. They'll have better luck for sure..
If someone catches a big one there (at cove lake) I assure you it is a fluke.
There are a few bluegill to be caught over there but when it's hot out you can bet any big cats are over in the main lake.

I don't think it's actually "legal" to fish there. You're trespassing on pvt land, if you're on the grounds of either apt complex that is next to that backwater area ... and you're on city property, if you're on the sidewalk between Squires and the water. There used to be a "No Fishing" sign, but it probably got torn down by people that wanted to fish there.
I live at Cove Lake Apts ... and I do know that people fish there, but I dare say I've never heard of anything being caught from there that was big enough to consider worthy of the risk. You'd probably catch more and bigger fish from Jacobson Reservoir ... and you'd be perfectly legal, to boot. I'm just sayin ...............

I have caught many good sized bass at Jacobson over the years. At one time they installed a net to section of a cove for the June fishing derby and after the event they took the net down to release the fish into the remainder of the lake. Thats when it got good...
