    Hoo-da thunk it?

Just got in from one of the more unusual experiences I've ever had while fishing. And it doesn't even involve a fish.

As the sun was just starting to recede beneath the treetops, I decided to take advantage of the fading light and throw a buzzbait along a grass line in a wooded cove at Lake Ellerslie (across from Jacobson Park in Lexington). After about a dozen casts, the buzzbait was about 20 feet off the bow and slowly churning the surface when, seemingly out of nowhere, a huge owl silently came in from my right and deftly picked up the bait. With a couple of strokes of his large wings, the bird began to rise, my bait securely in the grasp of his talons. I was dumbfounded. The enormous owl, which I believe was a great horned owl, was so close that I could have spit on him as he lifted. Instead, the only thing I could think to do (and thinking had nothing to do with it, it was pure reaction) was to yell "HEY!" and hit the release on my spool.

The bird had gone about 20 feet past the boat and was about 10 feet in the air and climbing as I hollered. I don't know why, but he dropped the lure at that point, continuing on about 30 yards and landing on the shore. We both stared at each other for a few seconds and then he took to the wing into the woods. Now, apparently frogs and reptiles are included in this owl's diet, so I suppose the wake of the buzzbait sparked his interest. But what impressed me most, the more I considered it, was just how fearless he was. I fish with my dog and this owl was not the least bit bothered by how close we were to his meal. And I'm impressed with how stealthily quiet he was. I never heard him coming and he never made a sound as he flew off with his dinner.

Having had an opportunity to reflect on the encounter with this majestic predator bird, I have to wonder what would have happened had he not dropped the lure. I would like to think that I would have had the presence of mind to cut the line quickly. My gut reaction was to hit the baitcaster release, a timely move given that the hook was about to set itself. What's even more amazing is that the buzzbait had a trailer hook! And neither hook snagged his talons. I'm left to wonder if my shouting startled him or, probably more likely, the metal bait didn't feel like the meal he was expecting.

Now, from time to time, I've had bats swoop down on a lure as it was arcing towards the water, but this is a first for me. Not sure what the possession limit is for owls

never caught an owl but caught to cranes. one on purpose but didnt really think i could catch him or never would have casted at it. had a texas rigged worn on snagged him right out of the air but he was released almost unharmed after a few gentle wacks with the boat paddle. no we just had to hold his head down to get the hook out of his leg. but they do fight like hell. took a good 10 min to get him in. then the next one i caught flew into my line and my crankbait snagged him. then he got hung in a small bush. had to get him in the dip net to get it out but he to was released.

Be happy that the owl dropped the lure and was not hooked..good thinking on releasing the bail so quick. Had a client some years ago that had an owl take his Sammy off the water...she got hooked...you really don't want to be anywhere near an angry owl...she will tear you apart.

Hey, Dave. Duff here. Had he been hooked, it seems to me that you have the option of either cutting bait or bringing him into the boat with a net. But then what? He means business at both ends. Some things are better left alone.

One of the best experiences I've had fishing was spending a day under your tutelage. It's paid enormous dividends, although you failed to cover birds of prey Seriously, anyone who wants to improve their skills ought to spend a day with our moderator.

This isn't an owl story but it is a bird story. In the last two weeks I have had occassion to see Bald Eagles on the Ohio River. Two weeks ago I was fishing about a half mile below the Henderson bridge on the Indiana side when a bald eagle came out of a tree and flew across the river and landed on the Ky side. Last week I was fishing on the tail of French Island above Newburgh dam when a bald eagle flew in and lit in a tree. Just after that another large bird of about the same size landed in a tree not far from the bald eagle. This bird was brown with mottled black splotches. I thought maybe it was a female but my buddy said it was a "fish eagle". Both events really made my day. I've been fishing this river for a lot of years and thats the first and second time I've seen eagles in this area. We have seen them around the Hovey lake area. And saw one down around Shawneetown earlier this year. What magnificent birds.

my dad had a jitterbug taken by an owl on norris lake a few years back i dunno if it got hooked but it got to keep the lure..... my best guess as to why the owl dropped the bait is one it figured out it wasnt edible and or second, birds of prey will fly high and drop their prey to finish them off and then swoop back down and get it and eat it..... good thing u didnt have no power bait on there and if someone ever tries to take the hooks out of a non sedated owl or any bird of prey.... get up with me cause i wanna watch that...

    Also not a bird story......but.

I had a buddy night fishing at Taylorsville a few years back. As the story goes, he accidentally threw a spinnerbait on shore........well Long story short......as he's popping it through the brush/weeds/trees/rocks, and every OTHER thing you can get caught on, he Hooked something and started running......WELL being the fisherman he is, he SET the hook, and the fight ensued......

A few minutes later, at the side of the boat, he sees a drenched, really HONKED off rabbit....GLOWING RED eyes, and bunny teeth, ready to open two cans of woop A.

Needless to say.....he cut the line.

    Later,

    Geo

i have caught a bat on a buzzbait night fishing. hooked him in his wing. my idiot partner held onto the line and took a pair of pliers and unhooked the bat and saved my buzzbait.

Hmm, hmm, hmm, thats really cool. Most dangerous bird I ever caught was one of my Grandpa's domestic ducks! It never tried to eat one of my rooster tails again though. Where can I acquire tickets to the owl dehooking event? That there sounds like a blast.
