I went to my first Tea Party last night. An article in the E-town News-Enterprise said that the Hardin County Tea Party Patriots have one the first Tuesday of each month at 7 PM in the Nolin RECC Building on Ring Road. So I went.
The Welcoming speaker stressed that the group, which started in April, WAS NON-PARTISAN and included Democrats, Republicans and anyone else that cared to join.
It was very interesting. State Representative Tim Moore (26th District) was the guest speaker. He gave an historical overview of “Taxation without Represention” from the reasons for the first Tea Party in Boston to today.
Something I didn’t know, was that the original Constitution prohibited Income Taxes and had to be amended (16th Amendment) to allow it in 1913, which except for a brief period during the Civil War was the first time. He then went into how it has grown to what Obama is proposing now. He also pointed out, and showed with examples, that enactment of high income taxes always leads to lower revenues because the high earners, either stop earning money or find ways to avoid the taxes. Conversely, when the income tax rates have been lowered, tax revenues have increased. i.e. Under Reagan and Bush. He spoke for about 30 minutes, before taking questions for about 30 minutes, but throughout the evening he, and others, stressed the need for grass roots involvement in writing letters, sending emails, making telephone calls and VISITING Congressmen, Senators and the President.
Moore said something else that really hit me between the eyes: the media and everyone are talking about the projected DEFICIT for the next ten years being somewhere between Nine and Eleven TRILLION DOLLORS, but he pointed out that the UNFUNDED REQUIREMENTS JUST for Social Security, Medicare and Medicade (and not counting the military and other parts of the government) is more than another 64 TRILLION DOLLORS. He left no doubt that our country is already broke, in more ways than financially.
