Pontooner, they make it sound like Military Health Care, for active duty and retirees, is a bad thing and a freebe which is not deserved. I'll have them and you know that when I joined the Army in 1956, I was told that if I stayed 20 years, I would never have another medical or dental bill the rest of my life.
I don't have the time nor space to go into how wrong that has been and how hard it has been for us retirees to get even part of what was promised to us. I put 23 years on Active Duty, including two trips to Viet Nam, and I feel that I have earned every bit of the Health Care that I can get from my Uncle Sam. Now to have Obama want to put me under the same socialized health care that 16 million illegal aliens will get, is a crying shame.
Thats my opinion.

Thanks for all those years of military service Grumpy.I don't have the time nor space to go into how wrong that has been and how hard it has been for us retirees to get even part of what was promised to us. It doesn't matter but I'm just curious as to which years you toured Nam?
Anyone who makes the assumption that medical coverage is "free" to military veterans is out of touch with reality to put it mildly. The men and women who risked their lives for all of us in this country deserve anything "free" we can give them.
And if anyone believes this is "free" medical coverage then let them go risk their life for it and decide if its "free" or not.
Chubminnow, I had to laugh at the way you phrased your question, because i definately "toured Nam." My first time was from May 1967 to August 1968, most of which I was touring with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, including the 1968 Tet Offensive and Counter-Offensive. By the time i went the second time from July 1972 until 31 May 1973, I had changed MOSs and I spent most of the tour in Saigon.
When "Tricky Dickie" ended American involvement in the war, I was told I was going to Fort Knox and I reported in to the reppo depot at Ton Son Nuit Airbase on March 10th to come back to the States. I had a flight for the morning of the 11th but, if you remember your history, they started playing games with releasing the POWs, and a bunch of us sat in that place with nothing to do until March 31st. When we finally stated to leave, I had been one of the first in so I was on the first plane to leave that day.
An interesting note (to me), I will never forget walking out on that tarmac to get in the plane. They had North Vietnamese Army officers verifying our departure and they were standing next to American Military Policemen, whose rifles were POINTED AT US. In the final debriefing, we were told the MPs would be there to keep any of us solders from trying to get at the NVAs. By that time, I am sure everyone was more interested in going home than they were in revenge, but it was a nice parting gesture from our government anyhow.

Grumpy I didn't take the article that way at all and think it's great that we offer that kind of care for our service men/women and retirees, so please don't think I posted it with any disrespet towards serivice men/women. It was more that he is against goverment run healthcare like most pubs are but he and his family are covered under goverment run healthcare, that he speaks very highly of. Plus his voting record as far as veterans healthcare and his own health care are a little wishy washy. I know he is a politican and that's what they do but still makes you wonder.
Now on to a couple questions and such
If it were a guarantte that no illegal aliens would be covered, which is what is in the bill now do you think the pubs or yourself would be on board? I don't think so and while you started a Obama scare tatic post I see the illegal aliens will be covered as the real scare tatics being used.
Sorry to hear you had such a hard time getting what was promised to you. Are you covered by Tricare that is mentioned in the article? From what I've read about Tricare it is very well run and efficient, covers some 10 million plus people and would be a excellent modle to build goverment run healthcare on.
You're RIGHT........about Tricare, at least.........
BUT you NEED to do some research to see JUST who RUNS Tricare. I know, because I work on it EVERY DAY....
Tricare is RAN by PRIVATE, for PROFIT companies.......it is outsourced by the gubment, because the can't do ANYTHING RIGHT.......
When the company I work for took it over (about 8 years ago), it was one of the WORSE ran insurance processes in our country. We took it over, got rid of the waste, added some MANAGED practices, applied STANDARD fee schedules, and saved the gubment a few BILLION dollars......IMAGINE THAT.

Interesting but isn't this the rule rather than the exception for how most goverment run programs operate? You're RIGHT........about Tricare, at least.........

I do know it is funded from the Defense budget and various Army agencies. http://www.armymedicine.army.mil/about/funding.html
Maybe they could hire you guys to make sure things are done right the first time.
Lots of government stuff is handled by outsourced businesses.......
Tricare, MAPD (Medicare Advantage Part D), Some Veterans Stuff (this is NEW..), and a few others.
Now, UNDERSTAND only the Insurance components of this..........NOT facilities.
BUT the gubment plans on creating a public option, which will not COMPETE, but will DRIVE private insurance out of business.
Another statistic most people don't know...........80% of all people are covered by NON profit insurance plans......the gubment talking about GREEDY, poorly run insurance companies is a LIE.

I don't see how it will drive private insurance companies out of business if it is suppossed to be as crappy as the picture being painted, such as long waits to get care, quality of care, death panelsLots of government stuff is handled by outsourced businesses.......

Later,
Geored tape.............. Who in their right mind would buy it even if it was cheap? See what I did there? Nice right?
Also if 80% of all people are covered by non profit plans then how exactacly would a goverment run plan put them out of business since it is non profit?
I don't think greed or believing insurance companies are poorly run is the problem most people have with them. It's more that they pick and choose who, when and how they cover you.
Guess we'll have to pick this up next Saturday (atleast I will since I agreed to mhall's no political talk for 5 days post) and I'm off to bed.
Sir,
You have earned ever bit of it. And from a fellow D-Vet, Thanks! Those who have never gone in harms way for this country will never understand why. They just don't get it that when you are willing to give all, that's precisely what you earn.
