The new Paul Van Booven WMA Elk Viewing Area is opening Sept 17th with a ceremony.
I pass this area on my way to Buckhorn Lake ever so often and finally have somewhere to take the wife and kids to elk watch.

Will Marshal Elk Viewing Area dedication at Paul Van Booven WMA in Breathitt County Sept. 17

Sep 11, 2009

Frankfort, Ky. - The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is dedicating its newest elk viewing area Thursday, Sept. 17. The Will Marshall Elk Viewing Area is located at the Paul Van Booven Wildlife Management Area (WMA) near the Breathitt-Perry county line.

The name of the new elk viewing area honors Will Marshall, the longtime facility director of the University of Kentucky’s Robinson Forest, who died in January. Marshall was an avid partner with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife from the outset of the state’s highly successful elk restoration program.

“This is an outstanding and fitting tribute to someone who did so much for this area and worked tirelessly to make Kentucky’s elk restoration program a success,” said Fish and Wildlife Seventh District Commission Member Doug Hensley. “We miss Will’s energy and dedication to the conservation needs of east Kentucky.”

The dedication ceremony starts at 5 p.m. at the new viewing area.

From Hazard, travel east on KY 80 for seven miles then turn west onto KY 476. After approximately 14 miles, turn right onto Buckhorn Creek Road to the ceremony. From Jackson, take KY 15 South for six miles, and then turn east on KY 476 and travel approximately 12 miles. At the Breathitt-Perry county line, turn left onto Buckhorn Creek Road.
