    Gatlingburg maybe? Pigeon Forge.
    Mammouth Cave

Any of the State Parks, how about camping???? Or a nice stay in one of the Lodges.

Lake Cumberland's State Lodge is beautiful, scenery that time of year from the overlook is breathtaking. Good food, and hiking, horseback riding other activities besides fishing. Just some thoughts.....

Depends on what you like/want.If you want touristy and people Gatlinburg,Tn would be the place. If you want peace and serenity, there are numerous places to go in Kentucky that are beautiful.Like MHall said many of Kentucky's State Resort Parks are nice.
If you wait for Leaf Change Pine Mountain/Cumberland Gap area is really nice.
If you want Elk viewing and mountain scenery Jenny Wiley or Buckhorn State Parks are great.I always like going to Kingdom Come state park and Bear Watching, but you have to get a motel around Cumberland/Benham/Lynch,Ky they also have Mine Portal 51 with a guided coal shuttle tour of the largest coal mine in Ky,Black Mountain the highest point in Ky,and lots of scenery. As you can tell I love the mountains from whence I came.Greenbo Lake Park is another.

You might try going up to northern Indiana and tour some Amish communities. The leaves may be changing during that time. Bet my wife would love it. This site links to some of the different towns and things to do etc.

How about Shaker Village.........and a Canoe Trip to the DIX river......you said you LIKED the DIX......

The Shaker Village is GREAT.......and the rooms are pretty nice there also.

AND the DIX gives you a simple non fishing paddle trip, and maybe.......JUST maybe a little fishin .

THEN a couple day trips into Harrodsburg to see the fort, etc, etc.

    Later,

    Geo

Hey Mark! I can tell you've never had a baby or two. There is just something about childbirth that doesn't "sit" well with a horse's back. lol

October is a bad time to come to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge because people from all over the nation come to see the fall leaves. They peak around the 21st of October and traffic is bumper-to-bumper with 90% of the drivers either lost or talking on a cell phone. During that time there are always traffic jams. Some are caused by people looking for a parking place at the Casinoes at the Cherokee Reservation (on the NC side of the mountain) but they are everywhere.

I have been on that part of the Blue Ridge Parkway and had to turn back because the road was closed due to early snowfall.

This is a great place in Asheville, NC to visit. http://www.biltmore.com and click on the part that tells you about the place. It is an 8,000 acre estate with a 250 room mansion/castle that took George Vanderbilt ten years to build for his wife. The grounds includes flower gardens and a winery among other things. From November thru January each room is decorated for Christmas. If you stay in cabins or in the lodge on the estate grounds, it can be a bit pricy but there are nearby motels that are cheaper.

If you are taking only three days it may not be feasible at this time because of distance and travel time. If you ever decide to come this way, welcome to my neck of the woods.
