Couldn't sleep last night so I got the electrical done. Finished the deck this morning and headed to the river. Caught 4 stripers nothing above 6# or so. Few small cats as well. There wasn't a lot of skips or Shad up at Newburgh yet. I really wish they would patrol the red line a lot more. There were two boats up in the flow. I was actually thinking to myself I'm going to watch these guys drown. I actually tied a rope to a throwable just in case. Morons were running up within 15' of the discharge, turning sideways and floating out.

We have been catching the stripers pretty good below Newburgh. With the cooler water temps, there is no reason for the shad to be up at the gates. The bigger stripers are there, you just have to find them. We have caught between 20 and 33 a trip and I don't think we have caught more than 10 total within the 150ft. mark.

What is your pattern and baits for the stripers?

Shad or skipjack is what I use. Went out this morning and couldn't find skips or Shad. I had some minnows with me and caught 7, but nothing big. I was fishing the Eddie behind the end of the lock on the Newburgh side. Send me a pm if ya need more help.

Justin, did you hit that hump that I told you about? The water went up 4' in the last couple of days, so I am sure that there is some current down there. You should be able to catch some stripers off of it. Right now it should be about 8-9' deep.

Yeap caught everything off it. I was messing around for cats more than anything but the stripers and saug's wouldn't leave my bait alone. Used a 4oz sinker, casted over the top of it and they crushed it when it started rising over the top of that hump. A lot of current with all 9 gates open this morning.

The Eddie at the end of the ramp is where I got the stripers. Everything else off the hump. I really need to get out there with someone who knows what they are doing. I kinda feel like I am fumbling around down there. I should of caught a lot more. There were stripers coming to the top all over the place.

You know it's a crazy summer when you can catch a limit of sauger just about any time you go to the dam It beats the heck of out the winter fishing for them.

Ok you have a hump 8-9' deep, how deep is the surrounding water? How far below the dam is it? I fish Meldahl dam up by Cincy and am looking to try to use a similar pattern up here for stripers and sauger. Any and all info is appreciated.

The water around it is 20'+, depending on water lvl. It's about 150' below the dam. I mostly just drift for them using a 2 to 4oz sinker depending on how close I am to the dam. I use a different setup than most. Main line tied to a swivel with a bead above the knot. Leader to the hook is 18". Now above the knot for the leader with hook I have another swivel tied to 15# test about 18" long going to the sinker. That way if the sinker gets hung up I can break it off without losing the whole rig. I don't use 3 way swivels because I don't like the construction. And because with the sinker line above the swivel for the hook fish can pull line out without feeling the weight of the sinker. Planer boards are also nice so you can spread out more. I'm far from a expert but that's how I do it. Any more questions just post and I will try and help
