Does anyone have a good Sloppy Joe recipe that comes close to what we used to get in the school system back in the '60s? Man I loved those Sloppy Joes back then.
Here's a recipe that I have but it's missing something.
SLOPPY JOES
Can easily double or triple the recipe.
Figure approximately 6 servings per recipe.
Freezes well.
1 # ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green pepper
½ cup diced celery
8 oz. tomato sauce
¼ cup ketchup
1 T. vinegar (or lemon juice)
1 ½ teaspoon Worcestershire
1 T. white or brown sugar
½ - 1 teaspoon dry mustard
Salt + freshly ground black pepper
Brown and drain ground beef. Add other ingredients and simmer over low heat for at least a couple of hours. Serve on good quality buns (e.g. egg bread) with carrot sticks and other crunchy raw vegetables.
