    Re: Good Fish Finder?

    Bassin Bruce,

I just bought a Hummingbird GPS/Sonar unit today. Was going to purchase Lowrance but have read nothing good about them. Talked to the guys at BPS and said I was looking at a Garmin when he suggested Hummingbird and to stay away from Lowarance. Looked around and bought some more items that I didn't need and went to the checkout when the cashier commented that Hummingbirds must be good. We've had many returns with Lowrance units.

I had a problem with glare with my new lowrance the first day. Finally I figured out to tilt the unit up so the reflection went somewhere else. Didn't seem to be a problem after that. Hope it was as simple as that.

I just got a new hummingbird 797 si. I noticed the glare as well. Going to get one of the sunshades from Cabelas. I replaced a Lowrance LMS 160. That is a nice unit, gps combo unit. It was about 10 years old and still works great, however, B&W screen. Thought I would try the sideimaging and it is amazing!!!! Bridge piers look like bridge piers, the side imaging almost looks like a TV screen and you can get a 150' foot view on either side.

Good to hear from you, thanks for the advice. I just received my Lowrance X125, spent most of the day installing it today and can't wait to use it (hopefully tomorrow). Now, I just need to learn how to read the darn thing! Is your unit out of warranty?

Finally making it back to the Cumberland River with some buddies in Nov. Thought about hauling the boat up there and giving the stripers a whirl one day to get a break from the 12" trout on the river. How's the striper fishing been? Take care.

Striper fishing has been good, it slowed down last 1 1/2 weeks due to weather change and them headed up river now, doing the usual migration though. For me last Wednesday was really tough but got in to a school on Thursday jumping and Saturday was tough again. Fish are scattered and not willing to bite much, but next week they should be at it again. Give me a shout if you want to go again some time.
The Lowrance would have been under warranty I just never did anything with it other than unplug it so the alarm would stop.

    Justin-
Thanks for the offer. I really appreciated you showing me (and my father-in-law) the ropes last winter. I learned a lot. I Still have only got that one though (and I've been itching ever since! ). Hoping that the rain will cease some so that the creeks can clear up before I head up there with my buddies. I know where to find them (thanks to you) as long as the water stays clear. I imagine the unusual rain fall we received this year, and the mild water temps on the CL have the fish a little scattered. Hope to get at least one more this year.

    Take it easy.

Sometimes my polarized shades make the screen hard to see - lift them up, its as plai as day.
