You could also go with a rem model seven in a .243 or a 7mm/08 and he will have it forever.As a side note, I read an article that stated that youth equate the jolt of the gun with the loudness of the weapon. Get then used to a .22 and then when "that" shot comes they won't dread the jolt. Most say when shooting at a deer they never feel the gun. Good luck.
