When you invite....

When you invite someone to go fishing with you on your boat, and they accept, what do you expect of them? When you have invited and fished with someone many times on your boat, what reasonable expectations do you have?

I have buddys that will pull mine or either help out with gas etc. I don't mind if they want to pull it & is good enough for me

I expect nothing sence I was going any way. If I was ta call you and ask "Wana Go Fishin" I would expect nothing from you. but if someone ask's me, I will always offer to help with gas, offer to use my truck, buy the bait or snacks. Heck it not worth a friendship, but that is just me.

Not quizing ya, just feeling other people out to see how they handle this kinda thing.

Wow, that is kinda rough. I would have really busted his chops in a kidding but get your message across kind of way for not having any tackle. As far as the 3 hour time limit I would tell them that I really enjoy my time on the water and to expect to put in a full day fishing next time they are invited. Unless this person has several friends with boats I think they would respect your view. PS, I would have brought tackle for both of us! Spent the afternoon with 25 6-7 year olds at a bowling birthday party.

Hummmmm I always have enough rods, tackle and life vest for 2 or more, but I would have to tell him or her, if I was going a long way up the lake, I can't promise nothing, but if was staying close to the ramp, I will do my best to get you back on time. But I have found out that some friends are only friends as long as you own a boat.

I would leave him at the boat ramp. When people go out with me to fish for fun they are a guest. Guests get treated with respect but they fish for as long as I fish. And you let them know how long you plan on being out. If they can go for that time then they are welcome. If they need to be back after 3 hours to watch a ballgame they shouldn't go at all.

No offense intended Bob, but it that is what happened to you, you left yourself open for it to happen.

When I invite someone to go fishing with me in my boat which i intend to pull, especially if its the first time, then I lay out the game plan when I issue the invitation. i,e, what time and where I will meet them; what lake we are going to and how long I expect to stay; what they need to bring for themselves (lunch, dinner, PFD, water/soft drinks, blacklight, etc); and any other information I think they need to know. After I have fished with them a few times, I don't feel I need to be so specific but I definately am the first time. Also, since I am probably going anyhow, I don't expect them to pay any expense for a daytime trip but if they offer to help with the gas I may accept that, depending on how well I know them. Also, I always tell them that they MUST WEAR A PFD when the big moter is running and that they cannot pee off the side of the boat but must use the urinal I have in the boat.

if they balk at any of these things or fail to follow my requests on the water, then they don't get a second invitation. Actually, I have found that being this specific is appreciated by most people and definately avoids problems.

I have a line of freinds that want a seat on my boat and I just let them tag along since I am going alone 75 percent of the time anyway. None of them can fish that good but I look at it as guiding them. I try to put them on whatever we are fishing for so they can have a good time. I don't expect them to pay nothing but if they do I will accept and I also tell them ahead of time it will be 7-10 hours on the water so if you have anything to do let me know ahead of time. I also keep a couple of spinning rods on the boat and have zebco 33's in the garage and tons of tackle they are welcome to. It always works out. A few years ago I put one of my buddy's on a bass over four pounds at Herrington. I enjoyed watching his hands shake holding it more than if I had caught it. In the picture you could tell he was as proud as a 8 year old. Good freinds and good company is what its all about.

its nice if they pay half the fuel cost at least. i gotta spend 50 bucks to go and provide a boat and truck. least they can do is get half the fuel

I shot the guy an email and told him we'd been fishing together for 15 years, I been doing all the boat maintenance, gas buying, planning, loading and unloading, towing and was just getting tired of being the tour guide as well as having to front all the costs and all the effort and all the tackle. I asked him to consider inviting me sometime, even he didn't have a boat, even if it was a guided trip, so that I occassionally could be the guest, and do a little relaxing. A wake up call to share the effort of the freindship. Since 1995, I've been 0ut 212 times, he's been along 50, and of the total trips, 99 were to Cland, and 22 he was a guest. All that from my boat log.

Will wait and see how that works out. In the meantime, since he says he's in the process of buying a new boat, and has said he'd get me out on it, I'll take a wait and see approach. If he invites me, I'll return the favor with an invite. He invites me on a paid guided trip, I'll go, and return the favor with 3 or 4 trips to show appreciation. Lest any of that------beach feet.

Boils down to a "if you really are a freind, put up or shut up, the gravey line stops here".

We'll see how it works.
