Hey KYDon,You sound like you fish the KY a great deal,do you ever fish for sauger? Thanks,BigcatThe river is still very fast. Reminds me a lot of Elkhorn Creek. Was in Frankfort pool yesterday. Just accross from Glenns creek along the rock wall deep channel. Water was running fast. Had 55 lb motor on 4 point upstream and was just sitting in place. Caught several small blues, 2-3 lb. Had something snap line (12 lb) just ran with it drag was zipping, just touched the reel handle and pop. Oh well. Those that like blue gill should had a good time, Caught one by accident that was huge (this was on a treble hook with nightcrawle, 1 oz weight about 2 ft below hook on bottom). Never get skunked on the river, but you never know what is going to bite.
I've caugh a few in the river. Mostly at night with minnows. What is a good presentation for sauger this time of year?
I was hoping you'd know?I caught a sauger limit three weeks ago fishing below Barkley Dam using a jig-shad presentation.I don't know if that would work the same fishing the dams on the KY or not.
I've caught quite a few sauger on leadhead jigs w/ grubs and chartreuse cranks rattling around the rocks (my peferred method).
Behind the dams and creekmouths are good, but sometimes you'll find them on the bank holding near a big snag.
I tried to fish the river yesterday but quit after an hour. Too much current and the entire water column is full of leaves! Instead, I went to Elner Davis and caught my personal best LM, weighing 5 lb 4 oz and measured 21". Only bite I had between the two bodies of water. Sometimes even I get lucky.![]()
JWP,What pool of the river are you fishing?Congrats on the LM,sounds like a hoss,BigcatI've caught quite a few sauger on leadhead jigs w/ grubs and chartreuse cranks rattling around the rocks (my peferred method).

I usually fish below lock 4.
Caught some nice saugers and whites from KY River last November using both 3-5" grubs and BPS Strata jigging spoons. The day after Thanksgiving last year was awesome! The jigging spoon easily outfished everything else. Caught an 8 pound drum that day as well... We would find slack water around current breaks and drop the spoon. The best water depth was 12-14' or so. If the river comes back down and greens back up I'll be there!
I think Elwood and I may try it again this yr....What about it Woody?....F-n-F the Ky River again?
Pick you up in 15 minutes with FNF rod in tow. Got to do all the fishing I can before January. Won't be any after that for a WHILE and depending on my surgeon and anesthesiologis maybe not EVER.
If I am speaking out of turn not knowing the exact surgery I apologize but, Woody, thats no way to talk. You'll be fine. Might take a bit, but you'll be giving em hell before too long.
