    Re: Scary Prices

I hear stories about funeral homes all the time. It really is a shame. Sometimes they seem just like car salesmen trying to up you into a more expensive sedan, than the compact that you had your eye on that was more affordable. I have heard of several first hand accounts of directors almost guilting them into a higher quality casket. As Don said there judgement is clouded or greatly influenced by the tremendous amount of grief a family is already experiencing.

If I choose the burial route, extremely unlikely, I would mandate the old traditional pine box. What difference is it going to make to me anyway. As of now, I want to be creamated (again, what difference will it makes to me.) Hopefully, no one close to me or any of you will have to make those decisions for a long, long, time.

Don't worry,I hear Obama is pushing for a Govt takeover of the Life and Burial Insurance companies next,so we can all afford to die.

Almost so poor here I can't afford to die?!!!

I put this funeral home racket in the same category as healthcare, drug companies, gasoline, insurance, etc...It's all a rip off!

    Re: Scary Prices

When my mother died the funeral home tried to double bill us for the newspaper obituary fee. When I looked at the final bill they had placed "second notice for x newspaper. I contacted my sister to see if she had requested that. She hadn't. My sister and I are from different states from where our mother was buried and I think they thought they could get away with this fraud.

I made another trip to my mother's home town (1,000 mile round trip) and confronted the funeral home. "Bob" wasn't in at that time but would contact me. Well that just wasn't good enough and I told them I'd be back the next day to see "Bob".
"Bob" finally said it was a mistake and would be deleted.

I just wonder how many times this "mistake" happens.

Competition sometimes drives prices down. Check this out: Walmart sells caskets!

Why not? Everyone is now ordering "take out." lol Some jealous wives may even be able to smile while making their purchase. "Yes mam, it's for my husband. He was a cheater and never went to bed with an ugly woman but he sure woke up with lots of them. He had a heart attack when he saw that last one."

There is a well known casket company in Birmingham, AL that makes caskets with the logo of the deceased's favorite football team inside the lid and on the top of it. Walmart may significantly increase their profits if they start selling caskets with logos and include NASCAR a Bass fish, boat, or a shotgun.

The more I think about your question, the funnier it gets. Can you imagine people pushing a casket loaded with groceries and a kid up to the checkout counter? Even funnier, a casket load of beer.

I've been thinkin' it might be kind of cool to be buried in a glass casket...and when they put on display during the vistitation they could stand the casket up vertically instaed of laying me down...maybe put some waders on me, maybe a flannel shirt...perhaps a rod/reel in one hand and a beer in the other!

LOL You know if rigor mortis does a number on you it will make you look like you are bending over to scratch your rump. Now that would be funny.

Walmart does have a pretty lax return policy.

Let's see what this whole process might look like.

Order casket online from Walmart (kinda creepy)

UPS deleivers it to you. (Can you imagine the look on the UPS guys face when delerivering a casket to your door.)

You look the casket over and test it out (yeah you know you would get in it) and decide you don't like it and will return it the next day.

Now you have to get a neighbor/friend to help you load it in your truck for the return. (Of course all the other neighbors see this and think you've gone crazy)

Then you drive how ever many miles to Walmart (would be about 20 for me) with half a casket sticking out the bed of your truck. (God only knows what the people who get behind/beside you are thinking)

Finally get to Walmart and of course there are no good parking places near the door so you have to park a 1/4 of a mile away, unload the casket on one of those dolly things and pull it through the parking lot and into the store leaving a trail of childern crying behind you and now the whole town thinks your crazy.

Approach the return desk with a loud "I would like to return this"
