I for one didn't think you were putting FnF down - just trying to offer advice - which I need plenty of!

I fished FnF in early November last year to practice on Herrington of all places and caught LM. Water temp was 65 degrees. Surely, it will at least work a little on C-Land which is clearer lake with a smallmouth population.

I actually prefer catching fish on the bobber to other ways because it's so much fun.

That's cool Michael, I always say a fella should do what makes him happy. I hope you guys catch some big brown sows.

Interesting tidbit that may bode well for you f-n-f fellas this year. There has been a unreal Threadfin Shad explosion down there this year. It's pods of Millions of Threadfin that are very small up to three inches or so. That Fly will Mimic those dieing threadfin later this year extremely well. Long story short..............I think your fly bite just might be all that and a bag of chips. I think I'm gonna buy me a BPS fnf rod and give it a whirl to. I've got alot of the other stuff I need to get started.

How is the fishing???? Way too many male hormones going on here lately. As far as fishing goes it is fishing and technically speaking the FNF will catch suspending fish any suspended fish. Fish suspend at different water temps and my bet is that if you used a larger fly and larger bobber to support the fly then you could catch just as many fish when they suspend at temps other than below 55 as you do when it is below 55. I don't think Smallies only hit little baits in the winter time but do think that any fish in the winter will take AN EASY MEAL anytime it gets an opportunity. Something that small just sitting there jigging ever so slightly in cold water is an EASY MEAL. These winter fish don't like to put out much energy to chase food because they are conserving all their energy to try and make it thru the winter. Works better in clear water, and I have only caught 2 fish on it during the 1 time I tried it on Ky Lake, both fish came off the north point of Rhodes Bay in 43 degree chocolate milk water. I obviously hit these fish on the head because I never got another bite over the 3 days, but I did not fish it a bunch because of the water clarity during this trip. Cold clear water anywhere in the country and the fly will catch fish................PERIOD

Frymans pool is about the same as the pool I live on in width...Depth...mine averages about 2-3ft shallower....which will cool and heat more quickly. I plan to do a lot of bank fishing down there this winter. I've got a few more spots I need to clear off...But we'll see....

To be honest the fly bored me to tears until i started catching fish on it....i catch fish all year long throwing jigs,cranks,etc. and just like the thrill of trying a new method of catching fish....and catching those big browns on a 10ft spinning outfit is a thrill...ive caught brownfish all summer on heavy action baitcasting gear and just occasionally get the itch for something different...i've never tried to offend anyone on this site and im pretty sure i never have and mhall i didn't take your post as critical...i will be on the water with the fnf tied up this weekend and am thoroughly looking forward to it

Thanks Steven, it seems everything I say anymore is deemed that I'm trying to be smart. I'm not always the best with words and so help me 90 plus percent of the time there is no Malice in my posts. I want you fellars to have a whale of a time and catch monster brown bass on Carolina rigged buzzbaits if that's what makes you happy and I truely mean that.

Size ranged from very small barely over an inch, with the bulk being in the 2 to 2 1/2 inch range. Typical shad color, grey, silver, small black dot, very typical. It's been since the late 80's I guess since I've seen a Shad spawn like this down at the Big C. In the back's of some of the creeks it feels like you could get out of the boat and walk across their backs.

I wander how much they'll grow in the next 5-6 weeks. I want to tie this batch to coincide with the length....? Grey and silver......???Interesting....You know I think I already have a duckfeather/craft hair version similar to that....

Usually the threadfin stay very small, less than three inches or so. It's even changed the striper habits a little and guys are throwing smaller baits to get bit. I'd say if you stayed in the 2 to 3 inch range amd even some smaller ones you would have it nailed. Threadfins don't get alot of size like the Gizzards will down there.

Seems I've noticed a lot of threadfin everywhere this year.....Cumberland was crammed full of em....Green had more than I've ever seen....even saw a lot of em on kentucky lake...these colder wetter conditions this year must have made them thrive...could make the fnf bite on like donkey kong this winter because there isnt a better imitation of a slowly dieing threadfin
