Don't have a clue as to how much oil my motor uses, but do know that I top off my oil every time I fill up with gas. It may only be a 1/3 of a gallon or less but I do this as a rule to make sure I keep oil in the motor and don't get out on the water and have it run out of oil. Good habit to start even though I know my oil reservoir is well over a gallon and could probably go a few tanks full of gas before it gets too low, just started that habit back when I got my boat and have never ran out of oil ever. Right now the boat is in the garage full of gas and full of oil ready for the next trip.
Thats a best practice I need to install. Thanks Woody.Don't have a clue as to how much oil my motor uses, but do know that I top off my oil every time I fill up with gas. If at any point your satellite reservoir gets low you have to bleed it in order for it to stay full. You filled the tank but you did not bleed it, so it most likely it will not purge it self. Fill the tank with oil and start engine while running on a hose. Loosen the fill cap on the satellite reservoir and it will start to fill the reservoir up, you do this until the oil is running out of fill cap then close the cap.I got my darn Oil warning alarm back.
OK....so I have recently had some issues with my Oil saddle tank resevior on my Merc 200 EFI. I filled up the saddle resevoir and put the rest in the main oil tank. I started with about 1/2-1/3 of a container. It got rid of the alarm. I have taken the cap off of the saddle oil tank on the engine and lifted the flaot, the alarm quits. PLUS, the tank is half full, and I understand that it MUST BE 100% full....see I am learning...lol
How often does everyone refill their oil per tank of gas. Think, tanks are different per boat.....I am using a 25 gallon tank. Quarts of oil per gallon of gas.
This works best if you can tilt boat trailer so that fill cap is highest point so you can get rid of all the air. I know this does not answer your question as to how much oil should it be burning but this needs to be done. If the pump is working properly the satellite reservoir will fill up rather quickly when you take cap off while running.
Thanks Justin,....I tried that on the water and because there wasn't any left in the main tank the satellite reservoir sucked air. It sounded as if was under pressure. SO I will bleed the lines once I refill. Thanks for that. I would hate to get it down on the ramp and it won't start, or I get that alarm again, or worse, it isn't feeding the engine oil because of the lack of pressure....So if there is no pressure and I just refill, what will it do?If at any point your satellite reservoir gets low you have to bleed it in order for it to stay full. If you have oil in your main reservoir you fill the satellite reservoir most of the way and then bleed the system. If the satellite reservoir does not start to fill when you loosen the fill cap than your oil pump is not working properly. It may not be working properly for a few different reasons outside of the pump being bad. The Merc is a pressurized sealed system if you have a leak somewhere it wont pressurize the satellite bottle, fill cap must be really tight, hose line connections must be tight. Lines are usually held on with zip ties make sure they are tight at hose connection.
You could get an inadequate amount of oil to the engine. The injection system will deliver different amounts of oil at different RPMs. With out the correct pressure it may not deliver enough oil when needed.
