Does anyone fish Herrington in the fall and winter or is it only a good spring and summer lake?
I only fish it in the early spring, during the summer for the night bite, and the early fall. Personally, I wouldn't fish Herrington during the winter.
i will fish it anytime, but it is also right next to the house. so, take it for what it is worth. i have caught fish there in the winter, but it is slow. as many shad are in the lake, you can usually hit a pretty good lick if you can find the fish busting shad, especially hybrids. the lake is usually pretty low in the winter as well, which eliminates some summer/spring banks. my grandmother lives by dunn island, and growing up, i used to fish thanksgiving and xmas when we were down there. if you are looking for a lake close to home, and don't feel like heading to far away, herrington is a place to go. it can be pretty tough in the winter. for bass, jig and pig, for hybrids, lipless cranks/ spinnerbaits, but that is just my 2 cents.
Thanks for the info. I like fishing Herrington because it is so close, I live in close to Nicholasville. I have been a couple of times since the weather has turned colder and have been the only boat on the lake, I guess there is a reason why, lol. Fishing has been slow but I have caught a few small Ky spotted bass up near the dam. The water temps have been in the low 60's as of last week. Not much surface activity at all. Still fun and relaxing to be out on the water though. Maybe I need to head on down to Cumberland as the weather gets colder!
I live in Danville, so Herrington is close for me as well. I wasn't dogging Herrington -- I fish Herrington alot -- but I usually head to Cumberland and Dale when the water gets colder to give myself a chance at a huge smallmouth.![]()
I guess I am the odd ball here,I have gotten more limits in the late fall and all winter than I do in the summer, If it works out I Will be on it this weekend. Dynatrak you around?
i love fishing a jig, and growing up fishing the lake, and being close, the lake seems to lend itself to my schedule. when we had our first cold snap this year, my dad and i fished the lake(he lives in danville). we caught a few bass. but like somebody said before, this is also a great time of year to go after smallies on cumberland(i haven't fished dale). but just because you're the only one on the lake doesn't mean its a bad thing. personally those are my favorite days, and usually my most productive.
Wormin, Sunday's open for me. Let me know. i'm dying to get out with you.
We can do Sunday. Just check the lake level and it is at 735, so we still have a lot water to work with. So lets meet at Braynts around 9 oclock. Have not been on Herington for around 4 months so we will kinda be in the dark , but I sure we can put something together.
pm me your number again and i'll call ya later this week to verify time, place.
My cousin catches the fire out of fish at Herrington from October - March. Last month he had some great days and nights catching crappie, flatheads and hybrids. He caught 25 crappie down there on 10/31. He fished for about 2 hrs. The last few nights the flatheads and hybrids have been doing pretty well. He's caught a few flatheads over 10 pounds lately.
I go down there with him from time to time and have done well on crappie. November - first of January has always produced the the weather is cloudy and cooler... Please don't ask where and how he catches them. I don't want to give up his spots and techniques. He's put in lots of time and effort figuring this out over the past several years. I will tell you this... keep an eye on your graph and follow the bait. If you find the baitfish on Herrington you'll be on the fish.
Good luck!
Don't overlook the johnson silver minnow, vertial jigging when it gets pretty cold.
Been on Herrington when the water would freeze in the guides but caught some
nice kentuckys. Rocky main points.
