Just tried out my new vice last night to tie some flies. Just curious if anyone else ties their own and what patterns do you like to tie? I have found that I like making my own flies almost as well as I like fishing with them!
True, but I make a heck of a net man!
Guess we'll settle this in December. Are you suppling the jigs are should I stop in at the ONE STOP today? JK!
See you both at DH in December.![]()
Let's don't talk about that! But what I can tell you is on the the days with cloud cover and wind sweep banks, fish were caught in 25 plus feet of water on silver buddies and jigs. Bluebird skies were tough and you had to fnd some shade.
But had a GREAT TIP AND WAS INVITED BY "NEWRIVER" a KY boy transplanted to WV, to fish with him and his BUDDY ANDREW from NC. Those guys know their fish and were great mentors. Shared everthing with me, even their HONEY SPOTS. Class A guys. These guys caught some nice fish but I'll let them post. If anyone ever needs a guide on "Newriver" in WV, give him a call......simply said, he knows his stuff. You can find his post on "www. smalljaws.com" a Pro Guide on Newriver, WV.

I'll bet you had a good time. We're only about a month away from the get-together!
I will have some flies there for ya! Too bad I am not gonna get any pattern ideas now that my thread has been hijacked!![]()
I tie my own and i like to use duck feather jigs with a little chart. the most but i also will use a little red or orange. i also tie craft hair in white with chart. or light grey with chart. I am going to try to tie some that look a little more like little alewives of threadfins as well. The problem is i just have so much confidence throwing the duck and chart. Oh and i mix a little flashabou in with the duck feather jigs.

tglass,
Have you ever tried the Wood Duck feathers? They are a little more brown than the regular duck feather. I picked some up at BPS. They look more like Crayfish than shad though.
I know that last year I used an all craft hair fly that was primarily white with a bit of flourescent yellow (brighter than chartreause) on the bottom that seemed to be fairly popular for the SM.
Suggestions for pattern ideas for you are anything resembling a small shad or small rainbow trout or even a small bluegill. Personally, Duck Feather needs to be in most of the jigs with a hint of chartreuse and then any other color you want. Punisherlures.com will show you all the patterns that he had tied for his store and pretty much he has all the basic colors covered. Duck and Chartr with either red, purple or blue and craft hair smoke color and craft hair white/blue/pink are basically the only jigs I use and I consider the Duck and Chart combo pretty much one color because I don't think that little bit of red/purple/blue will make a difference if the jig is put in front of a hungry smallie. More of a confidence thing, Red was the hot color in 2004/2005, then blue became hot in 2006/2007, but purple was the hot item last year for me. Again, could be that I just put that particular color in front of a fishes nose and he ate it but other colors would have worked also. Just like any other fishing bait they sell, different colors are more for the fisherman than the fish.
Colors that I thought about but since I don't tie, I don't have:
Duck Feather with Chartr/Grey/Black to sort of imitate a small black bass
Craft Hair with Black/Grey/White to sort of imitate a small black bass
Straight Duck Feather with a bit more Chartr for stained water
Duck Feather with Chartr and Pink to imitate a small rainbow trout
Hope these helps
