    An Honest Op[inion

I have a question about bait casters, I am familiar with them, thats all we had when I first started fishing, no magnets, no star dragsm and no mono line. I still use mine, but not as often as I used to.Two of my favorites area shimano left hand model for spinner baits and buzzers, and a silver garcia for throwing large pike and musky baitsI dont know how many bearings they have, never cared. But Now I'm thinking aboutn another one, heres where I need some honest feed back. Will one of these 8or 10 bearings reels casta 1/4 lure 50 ft, easily?I have several 6.5 rods, and wont go any longer than that, I really prefer spinning gear, and have rods from 13 ft to 5 ft, so i know about distance and rod lenght.Honest answers please.

Go with a LH Shimano or the Basspro "Pro Qualifier" (only 79 bucks in the Christmas catalog). I do believe more bearings help in casting distance, but I also feel one can toss a bait further(and more accurate) with a Med action as opposed to a MH. Just my 2 cents.

I know you said you wouldnt go no more than a 6 and a half foot rod but
you would not believe the difference a 7 foot med/heavy with a fast tip will make when casting smaller lures.I would ask a fishing buddy to borrow one and try it.it might change your mind.

As far as the reel is concerned a Shimano Curado or Citca is hard to beat. What the other guys are saying is true. If you would try a 7 foot medium rod you will gain a whole lot more distance than you think. I can cast a 1/8 oz shakey head 40 yards with a 7 footer and 10lb flourocarbon.

i know the value of rod lenght. On the great lakes 13 ft noodle rods with 6 lb mono are used to catch 20+ salmon. When we fished in the gulf, 12 ft rods and 2oz pyamid sinkers could easily be tossed 40 yards. Most of my spinning rods are well over 7 ft.So I will assume a 6.5 fast tip bait casting rod will cast a 1/4 oz bait at least 40 ft.or more

Half a Football field........that is some SERIOUS distance.

I use 7 ft rods, and don't think I can get that distance with a 1/2 oz rattletrap.....Maybe, but that seems like a stretch.

I have found out that it really depends on WHAT you're throwing. 1/4 oz is very subjective.........a 1/4 oz rattle trap will out travel a 1/4 oz buzzbait, or spinnerbait......

A 1/4 oz jig and trailer, will out travel an buzzbait and spinnerbait also....

THE worse for casting, I think would be a 1/4 oz crankbait.......

Its not a stretch at all. If you ajust your magnets correctly I can throw a 1/2 oz rattletrap 70 yards with 15lb test flourocarbon. My brother and I were fishing KY Lake three weeks ago and his baitcaster was a little low of line and he accidently spooled himself casting. He was trying to reach a bunch of schoolers that had just surfaced with a 1/2 oz Red Eye Shad. I really dont see where it is a stretch.

I bought a few Abu Garcia Revo S (cheapest model) two years ago to replace some of the round silver Abus. The difference was amazing. I didn't worry about the number of bearings since I figured any of the new low profile reels would cast smoother than the old round ones (also didn't want to spend $200 per reel). The only differnece was that the gear ratio (faster on the new Abus) makes it harder to slow roll a bait, so I still use the round ones. The point is, I wouldn't worry as much about the number of bearings as finding a real that works for you and is in your price range. All the ones mentioned here should make that distance.

Thanks for the input. I will probably spool with 20 lb braid. They really have made it easier to use bait casting equiptment. That lever that disengages the spool from the handles and then magnets. How the heck did we ever catch anything in the old days?

OK......go find yourself a football field, stand on the goal line, and cast to the 30 yard line of the OTHER team.......

I suspect your distance guage is a little off.......but if you can, MORE power too you.....that will definitely help with all type of fishing, especially chasing those schoolers......

If I had that kind of distance, I would have done much better the past few trips at KY... .

Agreed!!!!! Red Eye Shads and the like can be casted a long way....but not 70 yards. Heck, only about 1 in 10 pro QB's can throw a football that far!!!!!!!!! Do you realize that is 210 ft????
