First FnF Smallmouth for me this winter.

Good deal Michael...We need to plan a float on the main stem and do that exact thing. I've caught them just letting the current do all the work....I've been doing my fair share of fly throwing the past 2 wks...Those dang gills are wearing me out where I'm at though,,,LOL!! I set the hook and bout did a gainer on Sunday into the creek...

Just say the word and I'm there. I was only fishing a 2' leader on Sunday and just using a regular length light spinning rod. Once we found them, they bit aggressively.

Hey guys/girls, although i am a usually a warmer weather fisherman, this will be my second winter living on stoner creek with the water outside my back door and i am gonna have to break down and give the float and fly a try. I have never used this technique so if any of you that are using it on the creek could give me an idea on a simple set up of lures to buy i would appreciate it. I am planning on trying to use a 7 foot spinning setup i already have if that will work. I live on the ike's ramp section of the creek so i will have a variety of fishng depths, up to about 12ft or so with plenty of rock ledges, rock banks, as well as timber. I appreciate your help!!

I'm fairly used to fishing the FnF the traditional way with the long pole, braid/fireline, flourocarbon, flies, bobber, etc.

When I went to the creek the other day, I just brought one of my six foot, light spinning outfits, used the mono that was already on the reel and set the float about 2' up from the fly. The deepest water I fished was probably only 6', but I would have set it a little deeper if the water has more depth.

From that point, it was a lot like bluegill fishing. I'd cast it, the bobber would go down, and I'd set the hook. Not too much to it.

The easiest way to get the right flies and floats are to go to Punisher Lures, click on float and fly and get some of the duck feather flies and Bob's bobbers. I think Backwaters carries them, so you could go there and ask for help.

i have had good luck in both stretches of water, but i will just be fishing the back yard since it is so close and i am just wanting to try out the float and fly.

If i have my choice of water on stoner i would be wading lower stoner for smallmouth.

I got interested in the FnF system last year after reading what these guys were posting......I too fish mainly stoner creek (fryman pool)... I bought the FnF starter kit with the jigs ,a couple bobbers and the dope stuff and a 9'
FnF rod....I found after messing with the things for a while I find myself using
a 6 1/2 foot spinning rod most of the time..( not an FnF expert by no means)
but it seems 7 or 8 feet is about all that is practical leader to fish with the depth changing so radically....I would think you might not want to use a very stiff rod though...I use the same rod I bluegill fish with.

The rod length that you use on the fly is really depending on the leader length. What I mean by this is you can get away with using a 6-7 foot spinning rod in the creeks since your leader is usually no more than 8 feet or so and usually less most of the time. I use a 10 foot rod at Dale just because I am usually throwing a 10-16 foot leader and no way you can cast leaders 12 foot and above with the shorter spinning rod.

I apprciate the info. I have a couple basic questions.

1. Is there a certain type of structure that i should target in the creeks? For example- a rock wall in late afternoon that is still holding heat, log piles, suspended brush etc.?

2. Is there a certain leader length depending on the depth of water i am fishing that i should target. For example- 6ft of water use a 2ft leader,
12ft of water use a 4ft leader or should i just vary until i locate fish

i know these are elementary questions, but i know you all have experience at this and i thank you all for the help.

Yes...I seriously doubt a fella' could cast a leader longer than maybe 8' with a 6 or 7' rod......

Maybe after this year we'll know a bit more bout how to catch bass with these things.... so far have had only one day when I managed to catch a few bass with the thing..... I have caught croppie several times doing it and that is quite a lot of fun also...the bass in stoner creek still seem to be hitting a tube for me mostly in the laydowns.

Bourbonbales; Thanks for the response, I'm still learning about the new neighborhood. Found my guitar strings at the barber shop today, if that says anything about Paris. I'll figure it out eventually.
