Yes, that is Cricket. She died of a heart attack, in my arms, last year; I posted her obituary on this board. The fish she is holding is a 2-1/2 pound catfish she caught all by herself. She and I were sitting in the boat parked at the bank in about 6 ft. of water. She was sitting on my lap, looking down into the water, when she jumped overboard and straight down. When she came up with the fish I've never been more surprised in my life. I yelled, "Good girl, bring it to mommie." She swam to shore and took off running with her prize and guarded it for hours. That was the ONLY fish we caught all day. lol I'm so glad we had a camera for that one.
She was a real "fisherdog" and loved riding in the boat. We like to tent camp on an island and Cricket loved it. One day my husband suddenly became very ill while we were camping; I helped him into the tent and told him to rest while I administered first aid. Cricket sensed that he was ill and kept running back and forth from his bed to the boat. I guess she was trying to get him to follow her so I could take him home. Finally she came into the tent, licked the side of his face and started howling. She ran out of the tent, hit the water and started swimming across the lake. It was at a very wide place and I saw that she was getting tired and didn't have the strength to swim back. I jumped into the boat and went to her and pulled her out of the water with a large dip net. That dog didn't stop howling until I got my husband in the car and started the engine. She had never done it before and never did it again. They say a dog can detect a different scent on humans when they are ill and that's the only reason I can think of that she would act like that. A few months later my husband had to have emergency heart surgery and we had no inkling that he was having problems. In looking back, maybe Cricket sensed it before we knew.
She was as fast as lightening and dug up moles, killed rats, snakes, lizards, and was fearless. She loved torturing turtles and absolutely hated cats; she kept a feral cat up a tree for hours at a time. She finally killed him the weekend before she died and was so proud of herself.
I am seriously thinking about getting me another Jack Russell puppy.
