Spoon rigging

So how do you guys rig your casting spoon? do you tie the main line directly to the split ring? or do you use it with a swivel and a leader? or what? what is the ideal rod for it? Thanks.

I always attach a bearing swivel with a split ring. It nearly eliminates line twist depending on how fast you retrieve the spoon. I think spoons are very much over looked by many fisherman. I'll fish spoons year round with very good success! Good luck!

The main spoon I use is an ACME Kastmaster, I have found that with using this spoon line twist is almost non-existant and I DON'T use a swivel with this lure, I tie directly to the split ring, but it's probably not a bad idea to use a swivel.

As for the rod...I personally think the right rod for the job depends on the type of fishing you're doing when using spoons....for instance, in the Cumberland River fishing for trout you might consider something light in the spinning category...but if your fishing for Stripers then you might want something a little heavier or a little more stout with some backbone to it.

This is my opinion on the subject of spoons...I'm interested in seeing what everyone else chimes in with on the subject.

The rod as said depends on the type of fishing, my 1/16oz spoons for crappie is light action, and bass fishing 1/8 to a 1/2oz I use a med action rod, and these spoons are the acme and little cleo spoons with a swivel. Now when I am hybrid or wiper fishing at meldahl I use a St Croix Salmon and Steelhead rod that throws 1/2 to a 2oz with braid and swivel the rod also has a fast tip this is an expensive rod to me but well worth it, I throw jigs with shad bodies and grubs with it also. Also I have a diawa surf rod with an emblem pro reel I throw out in the gates at meldahl with and it is med hev and it throws a 1 to 6oz and is great also, I use 20lb braid with this and swivel. Like it was mentioned the rod plays a role and the line when Im casting on the gates you can feel the hybrids hitting it and I get excited and pull the lure out of there mouth do to zero stretch in the line. The spoons from anywhere from a 1/2 to 3oz I pour myself. Hope this helps a little.

This is what I do to.

My spoon of choice is the Johnson silver minnow. I fish it with a popping rod and twitch the bait the entire retrieve when bass fishing. I throw it in the heaviest cover I can find and use 50lb braid but should probably use 80. I coat the last several feet of line with parafin wax (used in canning) by stripping the line through the wax. I provides better abrasion resistance along with great hold on the knot. Color the back side of the blade with a red sharpie. I believe the flashes of red add to the wounded appearance.

Tie to a split ring on the spoon. I fish slab spoons this way for Hybrids/stripers. Some folks will set them up with a leader (if I am using fireline I'll also use a fluro leader) and a swivel on the end opposite the spoon. If you get a lot of line twist with the spoon, use the swivel. You want a fast action rod that has some back bone. Let the spoon drop on a slightly slack line. Most hits are on the drop. Set if the spoon stops or the line twitches to the side.
