Has anyone been catching sauger below Cannelton or Newburg? Would like to go this weekend for some of those tasty critters, haven't been yet this year. Thanks for any help.

Buddy and I fished below Newburg Dam on Sat and Sun. Limited out Sat fishing from sunup to 11:30, fishing minnows on a 3 way rig. Not so good on Sun, but did boat 5 nice fish between sunrise and 8:30. Front started moving through and the bite just stopped. Most fish were between 12 and 15 inches. Lots of boats out there, 30 on Sunday and 20 on Saturday.

Correction, that was 30 boats on Saturday and 20 on Sunday. Most boats were along the lock wall and a few along the sandbar on the KY side. As for us, we fished the main river channel near the lock, ~ 3 gates out in the river.

Anyone doing any good around the interpretive center near the falls? I am assuming the Sauger have come in.

I went Saturday and they were slow.
I did get my limit of 10, but they were mostly small and it
took minnows to get them to hit.
It should pick up soon

Fished the mouth of creek off of the river yesterday and caught 6 kept 5 in just a little over an hour. Tried crappie fishing up the creek and the bite was very slow, kept one.

Ive been fishing below meldahl quite a bit out of my boat and I myself been doing pretty poor. As for the other boats I have not been paying much attention to them, hopefully It starts up real soon.

From an older issue of In-Fisherman. CATCHING THEM ON THE COMBO RIG (3-Way Rig)

It's one of the most effective ways to fish tailwaters and deep holes. It's called the three-way swivel combination rig.


Tie an eight- to 12-inch leader to the swivel for your weight, which can be a 8-inch length of coat hanger coated with lead or a 3/4-ounce bell sinker, or heavier. For your bait, use a 1- to 3-foot leader between your swivel and hook. Tie on a No. 1 to 2/0 hook for your small shad, minnow, shiner or night crawler.


The coat hanger wire gives you weight but rides at an angle that doesn't get snagged like a split shot or bell sinker. Clip a 6- to 8-inch section of coat hanger or similar wire, slip one end through a snap swivel, then bend a loop in the wire so the swivel stays in the loop. To make the wire heavier, dip it in molten lead. Make it as heavy as you want, but don't make a ball on the end. You need it be straight like a stick so it doesn't hang up.


This rig is effective when drifted in the current below dams and slowly trolled upstream. Make a mental note where you pick up fish so you can go over that area again.


The combination rig is versatile because it is easily modified. You can use a jig (with or without a minnow) for your weight and a curlytail grub on your hook for bait. Tie on a floating Rapala or a shallow-diving Rattlin' Rogue. Look in your tackle box and use your imagination for other combinations -- this is why it's called a combination rig.

Sorry (???), But I lost your PM, but here is the answer.

Shore fishing the tailwater for Sauger can be pretty good anywhere along the "wing wall" on the Kentucky side using minnows. Also, some have good luck tossing jigs into the tailwater at the junction of the dam and wingwall (problem for me has alway been LOTS OF HANGUPS). Can't comment on bank fishing from the Indiana side.


Driving directions to the Kentucky side of the "wing wall":

From Henderson, KY, take hwy 60 toward Owensboro and continue untill you cross the bridge over the Green River at Spottsville. Then turn LEFT onto state hwy 811 and go ~3.1 miles and turn left onto "Ohio River No.2 Road. This is a gravel road. Go ~ 1.5 miles where the road meets the river and makes a 90 deg left turn. Continue for ~ 1.2 mile and you will arrive at a small parking lot by the wing wall.
