Is this a great place to fish ????????????

Is the cumberland river at McMillian's Landing on the kentucky side a good place to fish for striped bass if so what time of the year. Are there any guides on that part of the river I know that Fred McClintock did guide but does not anymore. I fish closer to the dam in the spring for them but only 20-30 pounds. I would like to catch one over 40 pounds. Also can you run a 18 ft deepv boat on that part of the river all year. THANKS

I doubt anyone is going to give you much feedback on how or where to catch a 40+ pound fish. If they knew they were there they would be there them selves and not forth coming with the info. I fish the lake so can't help you much on the river but all I hear lately is that the big ones died off due to water temps too high in river.
Good luck in your quest hope you get to land a 40 pounder. I think Fred was the only known guy that could put you on them.

Randell and Gregg with KY trophy fishing can put you on em too. Everything changed when the work on the dam began but generally speaking most trophy hunters fished much further downstream than the trout guys. It's nice to spend 10 hours on the river and never see another boat.

Justin's right, it's a tight lipped group as well it should be.

If this helps you any I can tell you Fred stopped guiding in the river altogether around the middle of November for stripes.

I took two guys from Indiana that never striper fished before this past Sat and Sunday and we caught 12 on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. Biggest two were 1 at 28lbs and the other at 25lbs. They were two nice toads on a bass rod for someone that has never caught anything over a 5 lb catfish. Both were caught on a Giz4 they were overly excited. I think if they hooked a 40lb like you are talking about I would still be cleaning my boat after they soiled it.

You sure dont hear much about the river. Either the real big ones have died out due to high water temps, or most people that fish it keep quiet. 10 hrs of elbow room combined with big fish sounds like fun to me.

Justin, those are true dandies. Those are real good ones for the lake. After 15 or 16 years of fishing Lake Cumberland, my biggest is 24 lb. I've hooked bigger but thats why they got that big I guess. Hard to catch.

Those are some nice fish from the lake. Is that 27 stripers in two days wow that great to hear someone doing good on the lake. The river is a great place to fish for stripers but you have to know the river good to travel on it in the summer when the water is very low. My best time is in spring when the water gets somewhat low when you can pull boards with yes skip jack that are over way over a foot long. They love them. They fight so much more in that river we use 50lb big game to keep them out of the timber.

Yep, 27 in two days despite the cold weather and snow. We also caught 2 bass and a carp. First off I have only ever caught 1 bass while striper fishing casting and some how we caught 1 small mouth and 1 large mouth on Saturday. The freak was the carp, it was a 10 lb carp that we corn holed, somehow he got snagged perfect center of a lower abdomen region.
The number on Sunday is some what disceiving though because we caught 5 fish at one time on umbrella rigs, 3 on one rod and 2 on another at the exact same time, it was cool. 1 of those 5 was a hog for umbrella was 15-18 lb can't remember.
I would like to fish in the river some time like you do greenriver I have only seen vids on it, it looks fun, 13-14" bait is always fun.

Justin - those are some pigs and the fact they came on artificial is awesome! I'd love to have a 30+ rip the rod out of my arms. If you don't mind sharing where you trolling the smack? Pics like these get me excited about the lake again.

As far as pulling big bait - hell, I don't even break out the stinger hook until the bait is 17+ inches...lol. Nothing better than pulling bait where the direction on the planer board is a mere suggestion.

I wish there were jacks in the lake - I'd be happy to never use a 1/0 hook again.

No we were not trolling with them I was casting in the jumps. They guys with me were not the best at casting, so I would hook one than hand the rod to them and let them reel them in. We were using dolly flys white on white but I had a Giz4 on my rod and hooked the 28 #der. A little while later I got the 25# fish on the Giz4 again casting in the jumps. Both big fish were in fishing creek casting in the jumps. Sunday was harder to catch in the jumps they were swirling a lot but not as easy to hook.
When the jumps died down we went and trolled the umbrella rigs for an hour or so to land a few more. Trolling in 45' of water in the main channel, baits down about 22'. If you got off the main channel in 35-38' was far less fish.
All my big fish have been casting I have yet caught anything over 22# with live bait. Which is fine by me I would much rather land a hog on a bass rod.

Here is another hog from Sunday, he was pretty excited as you can tell in the picture, he bear huged it so it wouldn't get away so he got slime all over his jacket. But most were average 8-10 lbs, nothing crazy but always fun to catch casting. Plus the 3 on one rig the other 2 were coming in on the other rig. We released all but 1 fish between the two days.
