    Cumberland River getting different trout

Not sure how many of you saw this, but the Cumberland River will be getting two new trouts in 2011. The same breed of brook trout that is stocked in Arkansas tailwaters will be stocked here. They get as large as five pounds.

They will also be stokcing a different breed of rainbow that is sterile. Because they are sterile they have faster growth rates, because the energy they would expend on reporduction is instead used for tissue development.

I read that and it sounds pretty interesting. Triploid hybrids of several different species have been used to produce some pretty impressive fish. The current world record rainbow from Canada was a triploid.

Thanks for the information Tim...could you provide a link or information on where you located the article...would like to read more about it.

Of course with all this precip those trout are safe and sound from our lures and fly's, the river is raging. Has anyone even attempted to fish on the CR from rainbow run (aka ray's chute) to the dam lately?

I hear ya Rocky...this is usually my favorite time of year on the CR. The last five years I have just KILLED the big spawners there with the fly rod, but this year I went to my "spot" and only caught three? Really sad. Fly fishing the CR during the winter is all I had to keep my insanity till spring.......now what am I going to do?

    Rich,
We might as well get us one of them saltwater fly rods . Like a 8-10 Wt and go after them river stripers ! That is if you want to cast a huge fly that is like throwing a wet sock !!! And cast all day without a strike ! Ah ****, ......I talked myself out of it already !!!!

TC, it was a short article in the new addition of Kentucky Afield. I will have a longer, more detailed piece in the Feb. issue of Midwest Outdoors.

Triploids get HUGE! That we be awesome if they can survive the "new" CR water conditions. I wish they would put in some Tiger Trout. They plant tigers all over out west were I'm from, and they are supper aggressive and hardy. They are a hybrid of Brooke trout and Brown trout. They are so cool looking, with actual "tiger" looking markings and bright colors. I think they would do really well in the CR.

Re: Cumberland River getting different trout

Two things to bear in mind. O2levels in the river, and what can be done about this noxious weed fouling the bottom? If this stuff gets any worse, and nothing can be financialy possible, this may turn out to be a put and take river.I hope the high water and swift current are dislodging this stuff, if not one more year of low water, and who knows how long it will be before its worth fishing there again, I live 9 miles from the burkesville ramp, and this year have only fished the river 5 times, Two winters ago I fished it 3 times a week, and caught a lot of nice fish.
