some info that was passed on to me that i have found to be useful is this:

during the colder months on late fall, winter, and early spring use a "zoom chunk" type trailer one that has more bulk rather than action. This bulk makes the jig fall more slowly which for cold water lethargic bass makes an easier meal. when the water begins to warm and the bass become more active and they are chasing bait try switching to a trailer that has curly tail or maybe even a double curly tail something that provides more action. These are just general guides I use. I like the zoom chunk trailers pretty well, I also use the net bait paca chunks, and I like the zoom double curly tail grubs as trailers...as far as colors I mix and match to see what looks good according to jig color and water color.
