A fellow reminded me when looking to buy props. A SS prop is good if you boat in clean deep lakes, but if you are boating in more shallow lakes with floaters and stick ups you are REALLY risking ruining your lower unit. He said...think about it. SS props are VERY strong, He said, "if you do happen to hit a log....what gives if you have an aluminum prop?...the prop What gives if you hit a log with a SS prop?...Your lower unit." Which would you rather replace? He is a boat repairman so I listen when he speaks. Now, with that being said.....I have a SS prop on my boat, but I boat ALOT in Dale Hollow. Not many if any floaters, and its, on the average, a very deep lake. Food for thought

I'm not sure about a 50hp my 200 Merc has a set of clutches that will let the prop slip if i hit something and they must work because since 1993 I have hit some stuff. and my stainless steel is in real good shape
If anyone knows does a 50hp have clutches??

I don't what I was thinking about or maybe I wasn't at all, the Lazer prop I have on my Merc the hub in the center has rubber mounts that when it hits something hard enough to break the lower unit it will slip.
if any one knows does a SS prop for a 50hp Merc have the same set up??

Sorry about the first post, I think I'm catching the some timers LOL

Look on E-Bay and be patient. Aluminum will be less than $50 and you can probably get that stainless for $75 or less.

I'm not a mechanic but I thought all new props had a rubber hub that will slip. When my 15hp hit a rock it spun the hub. Been around alot of large outboards and if you don't run a stainless your gonna lose bite fairly quickly. I wouldn't shy away from a stainless prop for any reason except for cost. JMHO....

Looks as if I or he was mistaken. I am big enough a man to admit when I was wrong. I apologize for the mis information.

The internet is going to give you your best price for sure. I reproped my 75 merc with SS. Michigan wheel and the Mercury web site have prop sizing tools to help selct a good prop. SS does perform differenty than aluminum. I bought a 13.5x22 Lazer for my boat. It brought the RPM down to 4800 with speed at 38 (all in range). Then sold it on Ebay and replaced it with a Michigan wheel rapture at 13x21. The smaller prop boosted rpm to 5100 and top end went up to 40. Wish I would have used the prop selectors befor I bought the first prop, might have saved a little $$. The boat dealers used to let you try props out before buying, but they no longer do this. It can be a bit of a crap shoot tring to get the perfect pitch and diameter.

Slowride, Go to Bass Boat Central & register. Then go to props forum & ask Mark. He is the best there is & the moderator of the props forum. Post the boat &motor setup you have & he'll tell you what you need going from aluminium to stainless. You'll more than likely need to go down 2" in pitch when going from aluminium to stainless. I stayed the same pitch & diameter because I wanted speed & gained 6 mph on a 70 HP Johnson, but hole shot is slow under a heavy load. That's a lot for my little 16Ft. boat. I bought a Stilletto from him for $200.00 versus $330.00 & higher everywhere else I looked. Just be sure to tell him if you want hole shot or speed & he'll tell you exactly what you need .

Oh forgot to mention that stainless props do have a replacable hub. They are designed to give instead of tearing the lower unit out.
