Hoping you "CR River Trout Guys" can give me your opinion on type of tackel I need . All the recent posting about CR has me thinking fly fishing.

Thinking of getting some new gear and would appreciate your input. Currenty thinking I should purchase a 9 foot, medium action, 6 weight rod? Comments?

Nine foot, six weight is a perfect size rod for most any tailwater trout river. It is also a good choice for fishing ponds and lakes for bass. I would buy a good quality reel with a solid drag system. Get you a replacement spool for the reel. On one spool put a weight forward line and on the other a sink tip. With that tackle, you will be able to handle most sistuatuions in this part of the country.

Yes that is a good all around rod. But be careful, After catching fish on a Fly Rod you will have a hard time going back to the spinning rod!

Yes, that's it...come over to the dark side!

On the CR, I use a 5wt 8 1/2' rod. A 9', 6 weight rod would be a good "all round" rod to have if you are going to purchase one rod. Now, how much are you willing to spend? I would recommend not spending a lot on your first rod as you will be new and inexperienced, and once you learn, you'll know what type of rod you want to spend some serious money on....but don't by junk either cause it can frustrate you right out of the sport. I would recommend either the Okuma guide series of fly rods/reels, Redington combos, Cabelas combos, or Orvis combos. They won't break your bank, but are nice enough to get the job done. Get a reel with a disk drag system. Of course, match your reel wt, rod wt, and fly line wt.

We need to get all the fly fishing guys together on the CR for a day of fishing and info sharing. Now, someone make a sacrafice to the CR Gods so that they will cease the raging flows!

Do not let your expectations get too high. It can be difficult for a beginner to land a fish with a FR. Have you ever played Golf? Fly fishing is similar in that it takes a lot of time to get proficient. (Pro FISH ent) Ha ! Anyway, you might watch a bait caster next to you reel in one after another some days. And cannot find a fly they will take. Then other days , Especially during a hatch. And you got the right Fly. You can way out fish the bait caster next to you. That is going to be a rare occasion IMHO! But that certainly makes days like that very special. Especially if you Tie the flies that you are catching fish on ! At roughly $2.00 apiece, Buying them can get into some $$$.

There are a lot of instruction videos online nowadays. And scuds of good books. Get you a book and read it over, and do a lot of yard casting. When you think you are ready, Practice some more! When you do take it to the river. It might be a very Humbling experience But it can also be a great way to spend the day!

Catching fish on flies that you have tied is very rewarding....as well as $ saving! Flies get expensive in a hurry, especially for the novice fly fisherman. You can make your own flies for pennies on the dollar if you know where to get your materials.

Fighting a fish on a fly rod is awesome! Alot of it is done by hand stripping, unless the big one is on and gets you to your reel where a good disc drag comes in handy. You are able to fish with extremely light lines (2,3,4lb) thanks to the forgiveness of the long FR. It is just really fun, you'll enjoy it. Don't be to hard on yourself the first few times, and make sure to go somewhere you will be able to practice catching some fish. A good place to practice nymphing is on the Hatchery Creek below the hatchery. Lots of fish that will hit a fly all day long. If you want to fish for something a little bigger, and in a place where you can practice your cast, hit the main river there below the dam. Make sure the CFS is low, otherwise it is impossible on the FR.

Thanks guys for all the input and to Kenneth for the link to derycityflyfishers. Live 2 and1/2 hour drive from Louisville, so don't think I can make any of your meetings, but hope to make it to the Kentuckiana Fly Fishing Show in January . Thanks again for the link...lots of good info on the site.
