anybody have any luck around southern indiana with this technique?any pointers?i have read a little about it,i have never attempted it though.......
thanks in advance.........dan
We tried at Monroe for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Had no luck. Couple crappie of all things. Was surprised, thought we would have had better luck.
I catch smallmouth out of streams and rivers on the fly in Southern Indiana all the time. Can't speak for the big lakes but I have about an 8 or 9 acre lake that it catches crappie, smallmouth, and largemouth when the water isn't frozen.
I am a float & fly "newbie" but have tried it twice at Patoka - had a couple of pull downs but no fish - looks like it will be have to be ice fishing now . . .
Float and fly origionated from a crappie fisherman, I have read articles about it. Other than stream fishing, the only southern lake I know with smallmouth is Patoka.
so you can only target smallmouth with this technique..........????????
No it's good on crappie too. I'd target smallmouth or crappie with it anything else is just a bonus. Unless you're into rock bass they will readily take it as well but most (myself not included) consider them nuisance fish.
I have consistenly been float n fly fishing the last few years, and have property on dale and fish it all winter. I have caught largemouth, spots, trout, smallies, crappie and walleye on it. So don't think it is just a few species bait. That fly is supposed to mimic a small shad sitting there suspended. So anything that eats shad will tear up the fly in a second. In fact, a guy at dale caught a 9 lb largemouth on the FNF at dale hollow last year. There are pictures of this hawg at the One Stop in Celina, TN.
But I have tried it in Indiana with barely any luck. The Float N fly is a crystal clear water technique, and I dont think the southern indiana lakes are clear enough for the FNF to be effective. It would probably be something good to try in the clear indiana lakes up north like Maxinkuckee. It is also a cold water technique. Most peole dont like to throw it until the water hits below 50 degrees, but I have whacked them on it when the water was as high as 55 too though. It needs to be fished in cold water because that fly isnt moving fast at all under that bobber, and it needs to look like a dying or really slow shad. So it doesnt look natural until the water is that cold.
From fishing Dale all winter with the FNF, the spotted bass and smallies are what I catch the most by far. My biggest smallie on it so far is 5 lbs, minus the absolute beast I lost last week right at the boatYou will occasionally get a largemouth or walleye, but since it is a technique for supsended fish, it makes sense that largemouth and walleye would be caught less.
I hope this helps!! If you have any more questions I will try and answer them if i have an answer
thanks for all the help fellas...........sounds like i will have to make a few trips southward![]()
What abouth Brookville? You can see about 10 feet down on the southern end of the lake towards te ****. Anyone try Brookville on the fly?
